1.) I've read on here about a thief dualling to cleric (or maybe other way around) and that once you reach the level to get both abilities back, you are still restricted to using only blunt weapons due to the cleric half.

I have a fighter I dualled to cleric. Once I get the fighter abilities back, will I also still be restricted to blunt weapons? It's not a big deal as there are some nice maces and flails in this game (SotSB).


2.) I noticed there are silver long swords in this game - are they better than regular long swords? Lets say a silver long sword +3 vs a long sword +3. If so, why? I'm pretty sure I know the answer to shields - I believe the silver ones reflect stone to flesh spells.

3.) I've also read on here talk of levels higher than 18 in this series (I believe it was this series). I thought in PoD all classes capped at 18. Is that correct, or do you actually continue to level past 18?

I don't know about 2. However:

1. That rule I believe is not enforced by the Gold Box games, and I believe wasn't even present in 1st edition. In Unlimited Adventures, I created a half-elf Fighter/Cleric to check and she started with a Longsword +4. Interestingly, Dungeon Hack, despite being based on 2nd Edition, doesn't implement the rule either.

3. In Pools of Darkness, Dark Queen of Krynn (not on GOG yet), and Unlimited Adventures, you can advance all the way to level 40. Note that not every class actually benefits from such high levels, however.

If they level to 40, does their THAC0 continue to drop a point on levels past 18, or is their a cap to that at some level?


I can figure out the silver sword issue once I get one. I only know about them because I had to look up the gauntlets and girdle to make sure I got correct results from them (they've glitched on me in the first 2 games of the series).

Unless the silver swords have a different advantage, like for attacking certain monsters etc.

THAC0 stops dropping at level 17 for fighter-types, 19 for clerics, and 21 for thieves and magic users.

1. I was surprised to learn that dual or multi classed Clerics can indeed use sharp weapons, at least in FRUA. That does make the Cleric/Thief not so useless after all. Incidentally Thieves can also use heavy armour when backstabbing in FRUA, which also is against the AD&D rules.
But I'm fairly certain at least some of the Gold Box games do indeed enforce these rules, but there's always some rules changes from game to game, which is annoying.

2. Regular Silver weapons work against Lycanthropes and Undead (maybe not the most powerful ones, though), when normal weapons won't. So they are better than normal weapons, but not as good as +1 weapons. Have you found any Silver weapons with pluses?
The Silver Shield refects the gaze from Medusas and Basilisks.

3. Stats, not levels, are capped at 18 at character generation, except for som racial modifiers.
But the real cap is 25 for stats, normally not attainable for player characters.

The main screen of Pool of Radiance has positioned itself to the right effectively cutting off a good portion of the view
including the hit points column. I have tried fiddling around in the DosBox config without success only getting a very
small viewpoint which in itself was well to the right of centre. If anyone has a solution to this problem I would be
extremely grateful.

dtgreene: What happens if you press Alt+Enter?
I tried this and the result was a very small window making it difficult to see the various controls. Fine if you happen to
have perfect eyesight or an extremely powerful pair of binoculars. I have neither.
Thank you for your suggestion but my next port of call will be the NVIDIO control panel and adjust the screen to the
left to see if that will solve the problem.

Has anyone else noticed the unresponsive controls in Morrowind whenever you are inside a building or a cave?
The mouse refuses to work and the keys for changing between attack mode and spell mode seize up.
