The sound effects in first three GoldBox games are better, if you use Tandy sound.

Pool of Radiance:
Edit dosbox_por.conf
Change tandy=auto
To tandy=on
Save File
Edit POOL.CFG in POOLRAD folder
Change the P on the second line
To T
Save file

Curse of the Azure Bonds:
Edit dosbox_coab.conf
Change tandy=auto
To tandy=on
Save File
Edit CURSE.CFG
Change the P on the second line
To T
Save file

Secret of the Silver Blades:
Edit dosbox_sotsb.conf
Change tandy=auto
To tandy=on
Save File
Edit BLADES.CFG
Change the A on the second line
To T
Save file

Bump, could a moderator sticky this topic?

It is a shame GOG didn't set these games to Tandy sound effects by default, the PC Speaker sound effects are really poor in comparison.
If I do this I get no sound.(FIXED)

EDIT--- Using the Window's Notepad made it not work properly... Using Notepad++ and changing it worked!

Although Pool and Curse default to the low quality PC Speaker, Secret actually uses Adlib sound by default, which is arguably nicer than Tandy, although I admit this is very subjective and I probably prefer it because i'm used to it.

Adlib is only used for the introduction music in Secret of the Silver Blades, you are still stuck with PC Speaker sound effects.

The introduction music is actually still played as Adlib in Secret of the Silver Blades, even when Tandy sound is selected under DOSBox

Good thinking.
How to do this on Mac, I wonder, and with which text editor? I can't get it to work either.
Bump.

Thank you for this. I've just started the game and hadn't really heard much of the sound effects in the game to be able to make a larger comparison just that I had a terrible static sound when moving around town originally and now that I used this tip its gone to more of a wood-on-wood sound which is much more tolerable, for me at least. The static/scratchy sound I originally had may have been worse on my computer for some reason as it didn't sound as bad on some lets plays that I checked out for comparison.
Thanks much! The sound byte when moving around town was intolerable.

I realize this is an old thread, but as of July of 2018, on Mac OS and using the Galaxy frontend, here are your pathnames to the 2 files:

As for text editor *shrug*, anything... Textedit will work file, I use BBedit because I am in awe of its power, but it isn't needed for this.

/Applications/Curse of the Azure Bonds.app/Contents/Resources/game/Curse of the Azure Bonds.app/Contents/Resources/Curse of the Azure Bonds.boxer/C.harddisk/win/app/CURSE.CFG

and

/Applications/Curse of the Azure Bonds.app/Contents/Resources/game/Curse of the Azure Bonds.app/Contents/Resources/Curse of the Azure Bonds.boxer/DOSBox Preferences.conf
Thanks for the tip!

*snip*
TY for this!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is extremely useful. I was just trying to figure out how to turn on the sound for this game and saw this post.

But I'm curious: does anyone know what all the letters in the POOL.CFG file stand for? I can't seem to find a support document for it.

Pretty sure the Default P is PC and the T you swap it to from the OP is Tandy.
The E and F? I have no clue
The C, appears to be the games defaut dir path, though it is NOT my install path. Mine is on my D drive
I've searched my entire directory and I don't see any "dosbox_XXXX.conf" files. What am I missing? I bought mine on Steam, perhaps this is the difference?

Side note: Am I the only one who hates PoD's sounds? If I could change them back to any of the previous 3, I'd prefer it. The sound of a weapon hit is OK, but the weapon miss sounds like a hit too. A spell hit sounds like a weapon miss, and that death cry after every enemy dies, yikes, it sounds like someone throwing up. LOL.
