REminiscence is a re-implementation (emulator) used for the original 1992 version of Flashback. It woun't come with all the fancy stuff that this re-released version has, as its the same as running the original through DOS, though it has a few extra things such as saving at anytime. (GOG's version is missing DOS exe files so you cannot run that under DOSBox.)

Firstly you will need to download and install GOG's version, as it has needed game files. Once you've installed GOG's version follow these steps to get it working under REminiscence.

1. Download REminiscence from here then extract it to where you want it.

2. Next you will need to grab SDL2.dll from here. This is needed for REminiscence to run, so download the 32-bit (x86) runtime binaries for Windows or SDL2-2.0.9.dmg runtme binaries if on Mac, then extract and put the dll into REminiscence's directory. (This step is only needed if your are on Windows or Mac.)

3. Now navigate to where you installed GOG's version and copy the 'data' folder, located in 'Flashback_Data\StreamingAssets' to REminiscence's directory (you should have a folder called data there once it copies.)

4. For music (as you woun't get intro or menu music at the moment) you will have to download the Amiga music you can get that from here extract the .lha file to data\music (you might need to create a new folder called music.)

5. The game will now run. For fullscreen and other things you will need to create a shortcut to your desktop, right click on the shortcut and select properties. And in target type the following afer rs.exe:

[OPTIONS] --fullscreen --widescreen=MODE --scaler=Nearest

(Widescreen will add images to the sides of the screen rather than black bars. To get the black bars remove the entire widescreen section. Scaler is for what mode you want (blocky graphics or the blurry effect that GOG's version has. Nearest will turn all scaling options off, remove that command for the blurry effect.) Fullscreen is for well fullscreen remove that to make the game run in a window.)

6. The game should run fine. Feel free to remove GOG's version if you wish.

Also you can edit other options such as copy protection, password usage (will replace level select on the main menu) and enabling the hidden animations that GOG's version has by editing rs.cfg (located in REminiscence's directory) with a text editor such as notepad.

You can also copy the voice.vce from the Sega CD version to the data directory. (Due to limitations with REminiscence not all voices will work, such as the Holocube.)

Thanks for the information!
Sadly, the 'carte' cutscene is missing; and some ingame music is too loud and there isn't volume control.

These errors corrected in the 0.4.5 version! :)

I was wondering if the new version would work with reminiscence. Thanx for the info.

Ah, you are probably using the x64 version of SDL2.dll instead of the x86.

You should clarify there that REminiscence needs the 32 bit version of the DLL, and that by "your system" you only mean Windows or MacOS. I fell into that one myself.

Thank you for the instructions by the way, nice to replay in yet another way one of my favorite games :)
Changed to the 32 bit version and now works. Guess I used 64bit one as the system is 64bit.
Cheers

Valid point about the 32 bit. I'll amended that now. And it all ready says (Windows or Mac) but I could make that stand out more.

Edit: Updated main guide, also re-phrased that only Windows or Mac users need to do step 2.

Thanks for the info. I can't run the gog version on wine, and this at least seems to work on Linux so far. Linux support seems to have ended with 0.3.7, though. Is this correct? Is there another place to get the source? I suppose it doesn't really matter, other than the broken fulll-screen and controller support (which may have been fixed in later versions; at least the controller issue was easy enough to fix). The changelog doesn't say anything about either issue, but that doesn't mean much.

I'm not sure as I don't use Linux. You could try emailing him and asking if he can help you. Or perhaps someone else can, i'm sorry I can't help.

His email should be here (you will need to login) https://github.com/cyxx
For Linux users:

This also works with the steam version (might be the same). I got it working by using the windows version of REminiscence with wine.

Accidentally I found that when pressing F1 - F2 - F3 during gameplay, you can filter the graphics somewhat, I think this might be a SDL feature (?)

I found that you can download some of the files here: https://gtamp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=45
