There's something weird, when I download the installers + patches on linux, I get 3 files:

./firewatch_en_1_09_20938.sh
./patches
./patches/patch_firewatch_2.3.4.5.sh
./patches/patch_firewatch_2.1.2.3.sh

The problem is that the 2.1.2.3 patch says it requires v2.1.2.3 and upgrades to v2.3.4.5, but the installer only installs v1.09. How does all that work?

The installer is the newest version. The patches refer to the older GOG installer names which used the installer version for their names. The current installer includes the actual game version in the name, 1.09.20938. Patches likely should be archived now.
