I decided to replay every single F.E.A.R. game last week. So I did. Now I'm onto Perseus Mandate, and there's something about that I've never noticed before. It's really fucking dark. The story gets more "meat on the bone" in this game, we get to know more about Alma, Fettel and Point Man from the original Fear game. We also get to see this god-forbidden facility were eveything started, now completely abandoned with corpses scattered around the corridors and terrible memories humming within the walls. There's so much detail and immersion in Perseus, alot more than in the original Fear. The original is still awesome, don't get me wrong, but Perseus' beefed up story is even better.

I'm one of those people who actually prefers Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate over the actual canonical sequels. Extraction Point is probably more scary though.

Totally! XP and Perseus would serve great as Fear 2 and Fear 3 IMHO.
XP is pretty scary as well and very close to the original campaign, as it continues where we left off.

Completely agree. F.E.A.R. 2 and 3 aren't part of my canon either. Just finished replaying PM yesterday. While I agree that Extraction Point is kinda more dark/scary, I still prefer horror in PM over it. At least horror in PM wasn't that forced and Alma appeared rarely (more alma doesn't equal more scary, more annoying and cheap more likely), and oh man, I was so tired of her forced appearances.

I actually like both DLC's slightly better than the base game. They are darker and spookier, especially PM. Just great games. Havent played F.E.A.R. 2 or 3 yet (Got them in the $5 bundle), but it seems everyone says they are a bit of a let down after the first game. Its ok, as I have already gotten over 40 hours into the first game and dlc.

They're not that bad, just different. Worth playing by all means. Fear 2 is extremely consoleified however, and the new HUD is terrible. But other than that it's okay. Fear 3 is weird in it's own way.

I will be playing 2 and 3 shortly either way. I bet I like them just fine.
I wonder why no one noticed Point Man corpse in Perseus Mandate, no Replica in game uses that model obviously (although similar but no red mask or olive elements, whole light blue metallic over shaded gray and white) and while head and chest armor is simplified it's definitely reskinned to look like him. Leftover, easter egg or perhaps early design idea for different story?. Also you might be noticed weird progress through Campase to Labyrinth where you end up in elevator but earlier some kind of armory is present behind Fettel. ;P

Holy shit, I didn't know about this! Nice find indeed.
Yeah, Perseus Mandate is pretty great. It and 2 are probably my favourites, and I have no idea which I'd say I prefer. I should reinstall it at some point, it's been far too long since I played it last.
My brother and I were playing these games and Perseus Mandate may be the best of the original FEAR games. It goes with the "squad of soldiers come investigate a bad situation and it just gets worse" story the best I think. Also, I enjoyed seeing other members of FEAR and assisting Delta, let it feel more like military SF.
What dampened my enjoyment of Perseus Mandate quite a bit where those Nightcrawler Elites that take multiple headshots with a rocket launcher to kill. That immediately put my into 90s arcade shooter mood.
Yes, those were a PITA
Haven't touched it yet. I finished the base game a couple of weeks ago and I'm slowly going through EP now. So far I prefer the horror elements in EP, but the gameplay in the base game felt more satisfying.
Not only darker, but much more action thrown in. More weapons, more ammo and more grenades/armor, almost at every corner. But hard enemies, as well. The nightcrawler commandos/elites will give you hell, in all honesty. Even their normal fodder-soldiers are not to be tackled carelessly.

I never understood why on earth they decided to drop the storyline and not make it and extraction point, canon. Those expansions were great. First rate stuff.
