There's no reason to not play this game. It's already been established that the game does not install DRM so have fun!

Hi,

I was looking for a FPS that could be played in local LAN.

Has the issue with SecuROM entries when launching the MP game been fixed ? If so, I'll gladly buy and try this game.

Side question : Is FEAR 2 also creates SecuROM entries ?
Hello everybody!

I don't know if this has already been mentioned here, anyway, I leave this tip: https://support.securom.com/removaltool.html

The name says it all... This will remove all files and registry keys from this shitty DRM. I believe that many of you are aware of this tool, but, in any case, it is always good to remember. =)

Cheers!

A good free FPS game i'd recommend is called Urban Terror
It runs off quake III engine but is it's own game.

I haven't played in a while and the community is not super big the last time I played but it's a very good game and is free so can be played on a LAN, run your own server on the net, what ever you want.

The game play is quite good although it won't win any graphics awards these days.
CTF is the most popular play mode although you could still find a DM or TDM game usually.

Many servers had their own exclusive maps so there was some really amazing maps out there.

I personally get nothing when I try to launch the MP version of the game.. not a error message or a FU.. nothing.

Perseus Mandate does have a seemingly working MP menu however it complains of CDKEY validation.
It seems like the MP in the game is completely toast.. even though LAN play should "theoretically" still be possible if everything was working correctly and GoG says LAN multiplayer is still possible.. it does not seem that way at least not on anything modern.

Perhaps the game will works for lan play on older systems like XP

I have not tried it my self but I think the game had a free multiplayer version back in the day that is still being maintained by a community here: https://fear-community.org/

If you want to get in some Mutliplayer F.E.A.R this might be the way to go.

Thanks for the heads up on this, I didn't see any signs of securom when I played but not sure what exactly to look for so not sure if it's still in game or not.. I thought I had read that securom had been basically broken in newer version of windows though.. as in MS considers it a vulnerability I think.

That may or may not explain why the MP version of the game just fails to launch without even giving an error.

I do wish GoG would either fix it or at least remove it form the product page.. game is great but feel like the way it was presented to the customer was.. eh.. sloppy at best.

So according to this: https://www.gogdb.org/product/1423058413#changelog

GOG didn't fix it, unfortunately. I know of a place that has the appropriate "No-CD" for this version, however, GOG doesn't allow sharing of cracks or anything like that, so I won't be able to post this here or mention the "place". It's a shame... These rules against "piracy" ruin all the fun/proper preservation of games.
This game isn't actually "free" of DRM software, but it does have the anti-rights parts disabled that everyone dislikes the most. Not worse than Unity-engine games.
Thanks Christsnatcher !

Excellent post and on point.

Guys do you know how to change FEAR Extracting Point (EP1) display to support full HD screen. It's kinda weird while original FEAR have list to change screen to FHD while EP1 feel like drawback, on EP2 still just EP1 of FEAR.
