The problem I have with Fallout 3 is simple: the turn based aspect that made the originals relatively unique was removed, along with the social element involved with cities, that is, the sense that you are influencing the towns you are visiting, lifting one group above another, or choosing to eradicate them all. It's amusing, and somewhat inspiring, that a dialogue based (archaic of course) system was more suited to achieving that process, but perhaps that it is why people still read books.

Yes, very well known and widely accepted. Here for example. On Fallout 1 & 2 fan forums as well. And umm...
Umm...
Hmm...
Definitely the 'worst game of all time' though. Oh yes, absolutely. This is 100% true and not rampant FO1&2 fanboyism in the slightest.

One of the things I disliked about F3 is that, much of the Fallout feel, soul, is no longer there. Take the soundtrack, for example. Compare the soundtrack in F3 to the Mark Morgan's musical masterpiece that is F2's soundtrack, and you'll see what I'm talking about. Or take the dialogues with NPC's, so utterly stupid, to the point that you almost feel like bashing your keyboard on the walls. Here's a tiny fragment of a conversation with DJ Three Dogs: 'So, you fight the good fight with your voice.' People, can you believe that this line of conversation is only be available to high INT characters? Can you believe that this line would make Master blow his own head off (now let's see how much Fallout you've played. :D )?
I really don't care about the izometric system, or point-and-click movement, or turn-based combat - all that I really wanted from Fallout 3 was a credible and immersive adventure into the Fallout universe. The way it is right now, Fallout 3 is not Fallout, it's 'Captain Cook's Sandbox Adventure In The Country Of Aggressive Radioactive Mutants'.
Quoting Marius Ghinea, from LEVEL Game Magazine: 'I've spent a quarter of my life waiting for Fallout 3 to be "A game to build a dream on." Instead, I got "A game to build a sequel on." '
...
But, of course, if you don't care about all that Fallout 1-2-whatsit-shmutsit, Fallout 3 is a perfectly playable, decent RPG, with quite alot of extra content to download that will keep you busy long enough.

I can relate to that feeling. I was a huge fan of the King's Quest series years ago, and then Mask of Eternity came out (KQ7) and it was completely different. Ditto for Might & Magic 6, it was a completely new game. I preferred the tried-and-true feel of the game(s) that I was already used to...just couldn't get into the new style for each series.
Although I find it curious that KQ7 was the final KQ game, while M&M continued on.

On a completely unrelated note, I've often thought how awesome it would have been if BioWare had purchased the Fallout IP instead of bethesda.
If Bioware made Fo3? Hahahah..
That's exactly what I thought after disappointed in Fo3 and found out that I'm addicted to DAO :D
When playing DAO: Origins, I can't stop thinking about "this is the way Fo3 engine should be done!". True to RPG root and not some kind of FPS Action (with slo-mo based) RPG..
And not to mention the DA toolset, very powerful game editor. I can customized the looks and (almost) everything!
Anyway on topic, I'm a Fo1 Fo2 "fanboy" (still hanging Fallout "coming soon" magazine page on my bedroom door even though I have kids now) but I really didn't hate people who likes Fo3. I just don't like Fo3.
All those years back, waiting and dreaming.. hmm.
And I think whoever bashing/attacking someone who plays Fo3, is I weird.

True that about the IP. Fallout as an IP was close to dead before Fallout 3. Why they spent that much millions to buying an old IP, they could have just started a new one. Everyone now has their own nuclear waste territory game.

Fallout 3 rocks! Of course I know a few people on the dev team, so I might be a bit biased...
Although, I've played through the game on the PC and Playstation 3 the whole way through about 5 times, so... :)
Sure it has it's fair share of annoying issues, I don't think they are any more than I have with any action-oriented 3D game.

Fallout 1 and 2 are best games ever, but Fallout 3 is a great game in its own right.
New Vegas will be hopefully even better - a kind of mixture between Fallout 2 and 3.

I really don't care for Fallout 3, at all. I consider the game to be an insult to the player's intelligence, and to be a terrible RPG all around.
That said, I'm not going to be mean to people who like it. I just can't possibly understand the judgement that the game is anything but a slap in the face to the consumer.
The stats mean nothing, and they advance at an insane rate, along with perks that unlock every level, makes me assume that anyone who enjoys Fallout 3 wants to pretend they're Silver Age Superman. No character plays at all differently from any other character, and if they do it's a fabrication of the player's imagination and their own tendencies to play certain characters differently, and if they took their sneaky guy and their action shooty guy and swapped playstyles they would not see much of an appreciable difference. An Intelligence of 1 gives only one minor instance of pandering, while in the original games it was practically a different game.
Another matter is the story, it's simply badly written and in many cases it goes against the precedent set by previous Fallout games. The Brotherhood of Steel have been replaced by an order of Fantasy RPG knights because Bethesda got pretty keen on those when turning Elder Scrolls into something far more typical in terms of fantasy, and decided that they'd port their efforts in terms of making the knights more typical over to Fallout where it makes even less sense and is even more patronizing.
But all of that, ALL OF THAT, would have simply amounted to a "bad" Fallout game, if it weren't for Mothership Zeta and its assurance that the aliens started the Great War.
No.
There, you're not just disrespecting the lore.
You're not just making an insanely imbalanced and stupid character system.
You're not just delivering hammy dialog.
You're not just writing like a dime store hack novelist.
You're not just making characters animate like marionettes.
You're not just using a system that has characters commit suicide because their bodies can't detect the handrail they're leaning on while you're out of town.
You're not just making certain stats only matter in increments of 25.
You're not just using the same 3 voices for 99% of the characters because you blew your VO budget on one big name actor for a character you see for all of 20 minutes.
Etc etc.
But you're actually taking a crap on the very foundation, the very theme, the very POINT of the Fallout series. If there was ANYTHING to treat with respect, reverence, and value, it would be that the war was caused by human greed and a battle for resources, and not because the Zorblaxians said "lol problem earth?" with a rather trollish face.

Fallout 3 is old news. Fallout: New Vegas is the new flavor of Nuka Cola flavor.
