Hello

First, i come from The Netherlands, so sorry for my bad english.

My first real game was Kingdom Hearts for the PlayStation 2, a pretty big budget title with allot of people working on it. But games on GOG are classics that aren't really the big budget titles like we know now of, like Call of Duty, Fallout New Vegas and much more.

But there is something in my thats says that i have to try games where it all began with. So after really liking games like Oblivion, Fallout 3 ect. i want to see what Fallout 1 was all about. I came here on GOG and just got Fallout 1, 2 and tactics.

So i started playing the game, started a new game, and then the first thing that came in mind is: "Where is the tutorial?". The didnt tell me about the controls, what i need to do then only fix the water problem ect. So i close the game and really want some help now and have some questions.

First how i want to play the game the way i like. I want to do everything that is possible in the world of fallout 1, this means that i want to complete the game 100%, every quest, looting everything ect ect.

Question 1: What is the best place to see all the quests there with some info about it?

Question 2: What are the best patches and mods that don't CHANGE the game or ADD things, but just make the game look better and remove some frustrations?

Question 3: What are the things that i need to know i play Fallout 1, any tips or recommendations in how to play the game?

Question 4: Where can i find what is the best order to go trough all the quests, because you really can go everywhere from the beginning some sort of order trough the quests come in handy.

Question 5: Are here things you think i need to know and forget to ask?

ADDED QUESTIONS:

Question 6: The time limit in Fallout 1, do i need to care? In the official patch (that is already installed if you download the game from GOG) the time you have now i much longer. And also can i convert the time in real time? Like 1 day in the game is 5 minutes, so 5 days are 25 minutes?

Question 7: Is the Fallout Bible useful or is it trash?

Other questions: Also, do i need to worry about the time limit? And i saw you can reload your gun, but where can i see when i need to reload? Also, i can shoot without bullets equipped, what is the different with or without bullets? Last questions, i got 2 different kind of bullets, where can i see what the different between the different kind of bullets is ? And, can i choose between running and walking, because i see some people run on video's but im just walking really slow...

Please give clear answers and don't use really hard English words i don't understand ;)

First off hello!

Welcome to GOG.

Now as to the questions.

The tutorial is in the game manual which you can also download from the same place as the game in your account.

There is a section in the manual that walks you through the first 10 minutes of the game. Read it and follow it if you can't figure the game out by yourself.

The game will not walk you through every step you need to take to complete your first big task. This is by design. Once you leave the cave at the beginning you are on your own.

You can't do everything in one playthrough. The game isn't designed that way, you'll have to leave that mindset at the door. Fallout is not about 100% completion in one playthrough.

Don't worry about 100% completion. Experience the game. Uncover things at your own pace. You will 'screw up' (not really) but that's fine.

My only tip is this: I didn't realize how great the game was until I had already played through it once and had started a new game.

Oh, and also, the Small Guns skill is the beginner's safest bet.

There is no 'best' order, but there is one place you need to visit to get the water chip before too long. You can find that in an FAQ on the internet if you want to spoil it though, it's up to you.

Also notice that there are 3 threads stickied in this very forum, one of which is named 'Fallout FAQ'. Lots of good info in there. But the manual is going to be your best source, it's packed full of good stuff.

Some pretty essential tips, at least for your first time.

* Don't lower strength below 5 or you'll get an accuracy penalty with most guns.
* Don't lower intelligence much below 5 or you literally won't be able to talk to people properly.
* Don't lower endurance much below 5 or you'll really lack HP.
* Perception is OK to lower as long as you don't want to be a sniper but not too much if you're going to use guns at all (hand to hand combat is a viable option if you make the right type of character).
* Charisma is also OK to lower - it does give you some help in conversations but won't really help you stay alive or kill people.
* With agility, it's best to adjust it until you have about 8 or 9 AP. I think that's when agility is at about 7 or 8. No matter what type of character you make, agility is important, even if you're going to try and run away.

Luck can be lowered to around 4. It influences the chance of you getting a critical hit on an enemy but it also influences your skills working. So say you have a lockpick skill of 50, there's a virtual dice roll made based on your skill level (like in a game of Dungeons and Dragons) but your luck statistic will actually bias the dice roll in your favour. You can be pretty good at something but still fail with it over and over again because your luck is so low.

Put a lot of points into small guns, use rifle weapons and right click on the picture of the rifle at the bottom to get the option to aim for specific body parts on the enemy. If you're accurate enough (you have to have a high small guns skill) you should try and shoot them in the eyes when possible. Also, if they have a two-handed weapon you can try and cripple either of their arms and they won't be able to use it any more.

To check your quests, click on the PIP button to open up your Pip-boy. Go to Status and click on a location name to see quests that have been set by people there. It only gives you a basic idea of what you're supposed to do and sometimes doesn't show all the quests you have (F3 and NV also do this). It's probably best to write them down on a piece of paper rather than relying on the Pip-boy.

Save often, and over a different slot each time. Save before you try and steal off someone and before you leave a town to go to the world map. It's also a good idea to save right after you complete a quest.

I know that i can't do everthing in one playtrough, but is there a list of what i can do, if it is possible in my situation to do? I found this wiki: is what you need, and [url=http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=1273]this patch if you want it for high resolutions.
Do you played the game with this patches? And also, if i play the game on high reslution, the 16-bit function doesnt work, any tips?

I understand, but the thing is that i dont know where i can go to that's safe for my to go to, like to high level enemy's ect. But also that i dont miss important places where i can get quests ect. Any info about that?

Well the overseer told you to go to Vault 15. If you head in that direction you'll discover a town on the way. Go in and talk to people (you can generally ignore people with generic names like "peasant" or "citizen", but still talk to them now and again to get pointers and also it adds to the atmosphere of the game). You'll get some quests off the people, return until you get a quest to do with raiders from the village leader, which you should do (try and do that quest in a non-violent way or you'll probably get your ass kicked at this stage of the game). Then you can go to Vault 15 - take a rope! You can get one by bartering with a certain person in the town I was just talking about.

By this point you should have additional locations on the world map apart from Vault 13 and 15 and the town. Go to the nearest ones and talk to everyone. It should become apparent where you should go next. The way it works is by people telling you of new locations when you ask about the water chip or water in general. If you follow these leads, you can't go far wrong.

I'm sure that would be a complete list, yeah. Though do be careful of reading too much of it before you do the quest and giving away what you're meant to do. I'd say there's a couple of quests where it's really tough to figure out what you're meant to do - even where you're meant to go - so it's good to use the Wiki for that, but most quests are pretty straight forward. Just a case of remembering what they are, since it might just say something like "Help John".

Another handy tip, though the manual is bound to say this too, is that you can access your skills with the number keys. So if you click on the "skills" button, you'll get the list of skills. 1 is the first skill, 2 is the 2nd skill and so on. So once you've remembered that, you never need to click on the skill button again, just press the corresponding number.

I never read what i need to do in a quest, only where i can get hem and how many there are. I dont want to know what gonna happen so ;). Did you use any unofficial patches or mods that improve the game without adding usercreated quests or other bullshit but just improve the game?

Yeah, sorry, I was trying to be vague to avoid spoilers. Basically, there's a quest you get off one of the two people by the town entrance. Before you do that, go into the house on the right of the entrance and recruit the person called Ian. He makes the quest a lot easier. Then go and kill the scorpions by asking the man by the gate to take you there. You have to kill every single one.

Return to town and tell the doctor and chief that you've done it. Then leave the town and enter it again straight away. There's now a new quest that involves you rescuing someone from raiders. I don't think it's really possible to kill them all at this level, so you have to think of another method. Once you do this mission, take the person back and that's pretty much it for this town. You should have been told about other towns by now - ask Ian too. The only other quest that I can remember in this town is if you go down and right and into the 2nd part of the town. There's a farmer there talking about irrigation. If your intelligence (or is it science skill?) is high enough, you can give him advice and get about 500xp, if I remember correctly.

With all that, and once you get to the bottom of Vault 15, you should be level 3 or near enough and have some new locations on the map. Just repeat the sort of things you did here in the new towns and you'll get more and more locations. Go where the people seem to imply you should go (they'll say "well you could check out THIS PLACE", so it's kind of obvious) and you'll be fine.

Thanx thanx thanx :D! I read also somewhere that you can add teammates that will follow you and fight with you, how this works and when can i use it?

Question from previous post: Did you use any unofficial patches or mods that improve the game without adding usercreated quests or other bullshit but just improve the game?

Well that Ian guy is the first one. The town you go to after the one I was just talking about (Shady Sands) is called Junktown. In that location you can recruit two more characters. There's another later in the game - I feel like I'm also forgetting someone... You simply just ask them to come with you - with the dog (Dogmeat) you need to be wearing the leather jacket and/or give him some meat that you find in the same town.

As for patches, install this one and then this one. There's also a patch to improve how you can interact with party members, like tell them what weapon to use or what strategy to use. I recommend installing that too. You can get it here.

Anyway, I'm going to go and play New Vegas on the 360 now, so hopefully I've helped you enough to get started now. : )

No bugs found in this patches? Is the children patch recommended? And are that the only 3 patches/mods youre using? Gonna read your awnser and then i gonna try to play the game haha :P.

I have used only that TeamX fan patch I linked for all 5 playthroughs of Fallout, and it includes the children patch, which you do need for the GOG version.

I have not used the widescreen patch myself.

Best advice I can give you about that is this:

1. Make a new save before you leave any location.

2. Make a new save every time you get to a new location.

Save often, do not rely on quicksaves. This is especially true of Fallout. You will encounter bugs/situations that you cannot handle, and if you cannot escape/get around them you reload to a previous save. So save lots and lots.

Thanks! :D Do i need to install Fallout v.1.2 patch (semi-official)? Because in the description the say that i need to install the 1.2 TeamX patch also. And i think the dont add childern with the patch you gave my, its not in the readme file so far i can see. :/

The GOG version of Fallout is already the official 1.2 version. All GOG games are the most current official patch, it's just the unofficial patches and "fix packs" that you have to install yourself. I think the children are returned to the game with that patch because they weren't taken out in the first place for the American version, and I guess that's the version the "semi-official" patch is based on.
