I bought Fallout 1 and 2 maybe a year ago here, I really liked character creation, but when I started playing I got bored fast and quit after maybe 1 hour or 2.
Do you think I should give it another chance judging by my background?:
I am not really an CRPG enthusiast though there are games I really like.
I loved Mass Effect, allthough the sidequest where very dull, and it might be because it had lots of action.
I played a bit Gothic, but i thought it was boring.
I forced myself to play all the way through Fable 1 because it was so hyped, but it wasn't really all that good. Could have lived without that experience.
I very much loved Knights of the Old Republic part1 and also part 2 although that one felt a lot more than just a bit unfinished, I maybe liked that only because it was old shool Star Wars, and didn't have that horrendous feeling of the movie prequels.
I loved Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, but I like everything that has vampires in it with a minimum of brain and respect for the vampire rules (like not letting a vampire walk in full sunshine in the company of some emo girl).
I very much loved Planescape: Torment. The plot was very good.
I kind of liked Baldur's gate, but maybe because it was a novelty back then.
I didn't really liked Baldur's gate 2 and never finished it. I just wasn't interested.
I didn't like Diablo, it was like an easy and graphicaly enhanced version of Nethack. And I really rushed to the bottom of that pit, killed Diablo on hardest level very quick and was VERY disappointed. Well this isn't a real RPG anyway.
I loved the Realms of Arkania trilogy and it's one my favorite games, but that was maybe because I grew up being dungenmaster of the Pen and Paper version.
And those are all CRPG I can think of right now that I played.
I was really looking forward to that cancelled Aliens RPG, but whatever.
I haven't played Fallout 3 (or even seen much of it really, except for the hype).

You roll up into another wasteland town with an itch to scratch. You have a Jet addicition that needs feeding and you head down the throughfare looking for the nearest punk kid dealer. Nailed to the side of a saloon a bounty notice flutters in the radioactive breeze catching your attention, your aim is good and extra cash is always welcome so you check it out. Something cold in your belly rolls over and knots, the name on the notice is yours and the badly drawn portrait is not badly drawn enough...
Fallout 1 & 2 is all about freedom and choice. Do what you want, follow up on storylines or don't. The combat can be a pain, although tearing out somebody ribcage for the 100th time or slicing them in two with a laserblast never got old for me. If you like Realms, then i guess you like the freedom to go where you want, if you like Planescape then you must like a good storyline. Fallout has both of these and a lot of humor.
I preferred the sequel, it was bigger and had improvements over the original plus you get to hear Michael Dorn playing a mutant sheriff, become a porn star, a prizefighter, have a shotgun wedding and learn kung fu. Or not depending on what you decide.

I never liked most of the RPGs you mentioned (and didn't mention).
PST is the one I still have to install and play.
Oblivion has been adviced to me many many times and I still have to get it.
As for Fallout 1 and 2, these were the first RPGs I ever played.
They sucked me right into the story.
I bought them last year and have already replayed them.
As mentioned by robobrien, there are lots of different ways to play the game.
You can add variety to it by having completely different character setups.

How far did you get into the game and why did you stop playing ?

I think I got my first mission that was going to another town and get something or find someone. I don't remember if I ever got there, but I think I quit because I found the game so slow, the combat was tedious and the graphical style was too depressing.
I also saw a speedrun done in less that ten minutes and found that to be VERY lame.
But I'll give it another try.

The atmosphere is how you make it. I found the games just too annoying to enjoy, and I'm a cRPG fan.
The user interface is just horrible. When you add ugly graphics to it (it looks bad in 640x480, it's not very usable with hires patches) it's just repulsing. But that's me.

I recommend creating a character with good stats und useful tag skills. If you're more powerful combat is over faster.

i would agree that you make your own atmosphere with some games, in rpg's i think a lot of it comes down to the small details and ingame choices that are available to the player. I have just started a new game of ROA, and whilst if anyone were to look over my shoulder unfamilar with the game all they would see is horrible repetative graphics and an awkward combat interface, while i see a rich world full of freedom and choice.
Does my party need sleep/food? Can i make it to the next town before darkfall or shall i stop here? Shall i risk a trip through the marshlands or go the long way round? Which lead shall i follow first?
Fallout has similar elements. You need money and decent equipment and come across a merchant party being attacked by slavers, do you help out? wait to see how the battle goes and maybe murder the surviving merchant guards and loot the field? Again the graphics are old and dusty and the combat is ungainly but there is a world full of player choice and consequence just beneath the surface.

yes but woudnt that be a sequel? i mean with the new places and everything you would want more such as people, quests, etc and it would have teased the players even more.
personally i love it the way it is because i can talk to people ingame and tell them: What the hell, i finished the game didnt i?
