OK this is driving me nuts. I installed the high resolution patch and Killap's Unofficial Fallout 2 Patch.

Now when I try to change the resolution in the high res patch (in note pad, this is correct?), I cant because every time I try to save it it says access denied.

I also need to change the graphics mode to 4 in ddraw.ini due to funky colors from Killap's Unofficial Fallout 2 Patch. I have the same issue here where it says access denied when I try to save. Also I could not find ddraw.ini, only ddraw and ddraw.dll (so I tried to make the change in ddraw)

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

That's weird... it almost sounds like the files are set to be "read-only". Try right-clicking on the files and going to properties, and then looking for a checkbox labeled "read-only" and see if it's checked. If it is, uncheck it, then try again. This should let you save changes to the files.

The other option that comes to mind is that you actually need administrator access to change the files. I've got my machine set up to give me administrator rights all the time, so I'm not sure how to change that if you're not set up that way. Anyone?

This was indeed the problem. I was able to fix the Unofficial patch but the resolution patch does not seem to be working. I changed the resolution but the game still looks the same. Any ideas?

As for editing the .ini or whatever files with notepad, what I've had to do (using Windows 7) to avoid stupid permissions that prevent me from editing .ini files is to simply drag them to the desktop, edit it accordingly, save the changes, then move it back to the folder where it was before. The changes will still take effect normally after its moved back in the program file with no problems or any issues, its just a matter of getting around those stupid administrative privileges and access denied messages, even if you are the administrator and/or are the only user on your computer.

I've had to do this with other games like Might & Magic VI and some of the King's Quest games as well, and can confirm that this method works, since its really just a matter of getting around stupid permissions in Vista, and especially Windows 7. I've also done it personally with the Fallout games in the past and it too works, but I use other methods now to deal with display issues.
