I'm new to fallout, it was way before my time. Which one should I get if I wanted to only have one of them but really get into the game? In other words, which is the better one? If they are about equal, give me the pros and cons of each. I really like old school rpgs, and I'm hoping to find something new. Thanks. :)

To me they are almost inseparable and you really must play both. I always say "Fallout 1+2" is one of my favorite games of all time. They're really both that great. Many will argue 2 is a better game because it has more polish and is longer with more quests and dialogue and characters, etc. BUT, I really think that if you go into 2 without playing 1, you really are missing an essentially crucial experience that will enhance 2 drastically. And 1 is GREAT!

I think it is safe to say that if you like one of them, you'll like the other and you'll want to play them both. More likely, you'll love them (if you can get into the old-school feel of it, which really, just give yourself time and patience and learn how the game operates, and you'll be fine!)

So, start with 1. It's a no-brainer to me. Enjoy! More questions/clarifications or anything else?

Nope! Thanks for the help! I'll be picking the first one up here soon. I'm sure I'll enjoy it, as I have enjoyed all of the other classic crpgs.

Haven't played them, but I have spoken to a lot of people about them, and they say that Fallout 1 is very good and serious while Fallout 2 is sort of the enhanced version with more humour.

I prefer Fallout 1 TBH, and I really recommend starting with the first game purely so you can fully appreciate it without being constantly bothered by the absence of features added in the second game

Totally agree. Start with Fallout 1. It is a great game and it is really easy to get to know it really well. Fallout 2 is much larger with more quests more interesting choices but also more complex. For that reason whenever I have a few hours to kill I play Fallout 1.

Oh definitely start with the first game. It is shorter but it is more fun in my opinion.

Because of the time limit for the water chip, I can't recommend the first one for someone new to the series or RPGs. Of course if you manage to win that mission the rest of the game is fine.
Overall though I have to say I prefer Fallout2 as it is the larger more refined game.

Oh sod off with that stuff already. You can finish this game in 20 minutes if you do it right. The time limit means absolutely fuck all in this game. Unless for whatever reason you can find more than 6/7 hours worth of gameplay. Which I have yet to do.

Edit: Fallout 2 is only more refined thanks to the mod support. It is a buggy piece of shite without it.

Are you saying this new player will go and watch a full playthrough of the game, speed run even, and then start playing? Because that's normal? And that (requirement to watch a playthrough) is what makes it for you not an issue for this new player to start with the first game?

You know, I have been reading your comment for five minutes and haven't made sense out of it yet. I take it you're completely oblivious to the Let's Play generation?

On topic though, ignore this individuals complaint about a timer. The clock ticking is really irrelevant and quite an empty threat.
