OK. This is beginning to explain a lot. You have a few possible causes of your particular problem. I will list what I see and try to help you to the best of my ability.
Possible causes will be listed in order of their appearance:

The bold item in the above is a definite cause for concern. Do you have a lot of icons in the lower left corner of your taskbar? If so disable anything that's not important for example stuff like Steam or anything not related to Windows. Your amount used is more than is available in your page file. This has been known to cause many problems with games. You may want to run a quick scan of your system for viruses and trojans as well because those will bloat your page file. Make sure to get the latest definitions for your antivirus software. I will get into the specifics of fixing your page file in a bit.

With this card I should be telling you to upgrade because it is an integrated chipset and it is kind of old. Also, I am having trouble finding any drivers for it. Of course, if you download the latest DirectX 10 that may fix that problem but I highly doubt it.

Your sound drivers are 5 years old. They could also cause your crashing problems. Fortunately enough I have found a webpage that has the latest drivers for that.
Realtek 97 Audio Codecs website:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsCheck.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=23&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false download the ones for XP and run them.
Also, try stopping by Windows Update they may or may not have other updates for you there...
Thanks a bunch for the time you put into this.
Could you explain to me how exactly to work with the "page file?"

Could you explain to me how exactly to work with the "page file?"

I hate seeing people being denied from enjoying a good game and try to help out whenever and however I can.
Have you done your antivirus scan yet? Did it come up with anything? If there was nothing, then the next best thing would to be to change the actual size of the page file and see if that helps some. I also noticed you don't have that much RAM. One thing I would recommend is getting some more memory for your PC because WinXP tends to be a hog about memory.
Alternatively, if you want to do something safer than mucking about with your page file, you can do something known as a clean boot into WIndows.
Here's how to do a clean boot:
In the same place where you typed DXDIAG, type in "msconfig" (without quotes).
Go to the Services tab.
You will (or should) see a check box that says "Hide all Microsoft services". Check that box and it will show you all non-Microsoft programs running in the background. Disable everything except anything related to your graphics card and audio.
Restart the comp and run dxdiag and note the page file. It should go down a bit.
I have found a website that explains how to change the size of your page file far better than I could. The rule of thumb about page files is they should be 3 times your RAM. So if you have 448 megs of RAM the page file should be around 1300-1500 megs...
Page file website:
http://www.petri.co.il/pagefile_optimization.htm
AVG does automatic scans fairly regularly- had one pop up a few hours ago, it caught a bad file or two and fixed it. will that do?
Also, I mucked about with the icons and now the only ones up are AVG and some volume controlling something that didn't seem to take up much, and i couldn't figure out how to turn it off regardless. The size is pretty much the same- I think using the interwebs takes up some of the virtual mempry? I dunno. I'll give the webpage a look, thanks again.
EDIT: If I do the clean boot, is there a "qwik-n-ez" way to restart everything that was running in the background?
What sort of dangers are attatched to messing with the page file?

last I knew rule of thumb was listed as 1.5 times your ram. I usually do 2x though.

Just click the enable all button in msconfig in the Services tab.
There really isn't a danger unless you mistype the size (15000 megabytes as opposed to 1500). I think WinXP has a recommendation for the file size and you can click a button itn the page file menu and it will set it to that. But I would give the pagefile more since you have so little RAM right now.
That website gives a step by step walkthrough on how to set the size and it has visual aids as well that should be helpful.
And if you can, think about upgrading your card and adding some RAM. I'm only saying this because of what I have seen in your DXdiag and all..
Thanks a lot for your advice. I'll give a post letting you know how all of this goes.
on a scale of 1 to 10, how terrible is my current amount of RAM?

Take your time and write stuff down if you're not sure about it.
I hate telling people their hardware, which they paid good money for, is bad or anything so I will tell you this: The amount of RAM you have could be bigger..
arrgh.
Epic failure.
Virtual memory is now 651 MB used, 1034 Available.
Exact same problem- Click Icon, black screen, error noise (a deep one-note error noise, not the high two note error noise) and then upon Esc-ing out the program is not responding.
EDIT: It's not set to run in any compatibility mode- could that help?

Try it out...
didn't work, unfortunately. so we've ruled out the paging file deal, and it isn't anything with compatibility. What should I do with the sound card update tha you were talking about?
EDIT: On a whim, I copy pasted the error text into google. It came up with three responses: some programming gibberish, this thread, and this page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262490
It talks about this error popping up on Windows 2000-based systems when, quote
"This error message occurs because the operating system does not allocate a large enough buffer for the maximum string length that is permitted."
Any ideas as to whether or not that is any help at all with this?

Download the drivers from the website that I posted in this thread....

That article says to download the latest service pack. Try doing that if you haven't done so already.
