OK, I am playing the game (Fallout 2) for the first time and I can get through the first tunnel level and make it outside, but I have about 29 health points left and I am surrounded by bunches of enemies.
How I am suppose to get away?
I tried to fight but I end up dying every time.
Did I miss something underground? Any tips would be great.
Thanks :o)
Edit: to list version of game.

Sorry, I'd need more info before offering any suggestion, I'm a bit confused as to where you are...
After the beginning (with the ants and such, inside the temple, after doing the one on one) you'd get a cutscene and be back in Arroyo and I can't remember any place in the beginning where you are surrounded by enemies...
One way (which you might want to remember for encounters during worldmap travel) is to run away, run towards the end of the screen and run out and continue the travel. (that can come in handy even when you've made your PC pretty tough, fire geckos aren't the easiest of creatures)
Remembered one thing (since I suspect you're still inseide the temple, even if I can't remember a place where you're surrounded inside it either) look inside urns and that and you'll find some healing powder, when hurt use it. (right-click for arrow and use the "open hand", not the one with palm down, and you'll get a bit of health back)
Another thing, tread carefully, try to get one at a time to attack you, the rest of the enemies might not notice you if you move slowly forward and wait for one enemy to attack you. (finish that off before going on at a slow pace)
This is prob. not much help for you, but as I am not sure where you are I can't offer more unfortunately, hope it's of some help at least.

Hmm, the only tunnel near the beginning of either Fallout 1 or 2 is at the very start of Fallout 1, when you're standing outside the vault. However, you say you're playing Fallout 2.
I'm wondering if you've come across a random encounter when traveling on the world map. The first time I played Fallout 1, I found myself suddenly surrounded by radscorpions, and I didn't stand a chance against them. If this is what might've happened, try running away. If that doesn't work, try loading an earlier save, or if you don't have one, starting over.
Save early, save often.

Perhaps you're in the garden in Arroyo? If so, you should be able to just walk away from the attacking plants, if my memory serves me correctly they have no ranged attacks
Guys, thanks for the help so far. Let me explain a little more.
I went into the temple to prove myself or something like that. I traveled all the way through about 3 different areas of the temple (1 door had to pick to open, 1 door I used explosives on and the final door is with the man guarding it).
When I come to the last door (third one) where there is a man standing there, I have to fight and kill him in order take a key from him which unlocks the door.
Once I go through the final door I find myself outside in an enemy camp. I start directly outside a tent (there are about 5 or 6 tents total), where some priest type person is located. He runs off screaming and all the guards/enemies treat me as the enemy and come at me.
There are 2 directly near me, but if I run others see me and take up the pursuit.
I did not receive any cut scene and I restarted the went back outside from where I started originally and talked to a person that said I needed to complete the quest to prove myself (something like that anyway).
If you need any other information just let me know.

You're not supposed to kill him, just rough him up a bit.
I'm not sure if that's what's happening, but if you kill him, that might make everyone in the village (your character's home village, not "an enemy camp") hostile.

No, you don't have to kill him. You can choose: If you are good in speaking, you can talk him down so he leaves and you can go to the vault suite or you fight against him and after some hits, he gives up and also runs away, so you can go to the vault suite.
If you kill him, Arroyo - your home village - is not happy. ;)
Interesting. I did not completely kill him the first time but he ran away. So every time I tried to get near him again he kept running away, and I never again received the Talk Icon, but only the Attack Icon.
I will go back and try again.
Thanks everyone.
OK, guys your advice was spot on. I talked to him, fought him and then got through the level. I am now the Chosen One and wearing my spiffy number 13 outfit so I look stylish on my questing adventures! :o)
Thanks for the help...I am sure I will be back for more help.

Your memory serves you wrong I'm afraid, they shoot thorns, spores or whatever they were called, at you. (they don't have a long reach with them though)

If I had known that you killed him I would've understood why you were surrounded by enemies and could've aided you. :)
When someone who's not a real enemy (villagers, that bloke and such) runs away and you're stuck in battle, check the lower, right side of the screen, there are two buttons there "combat" and "turn", use the "combat" to get out of combat mode. (if they're real enemies the game won't allow you to leave combat mode)
In some cases it might think of villagers as enemies though, in those cases doing a "end turn" first and then "end combat" usually works, if not and you're sure that it's just one of your partymembers going on the attack on someone who's not really hostile, move towards the opposite direction and repeat the above.
Very injured enemies can start to run away and if you know that you have no chance of killing them, stand still and let someone from your party chase after them instead. (the enemies will stand still and let themselves be killed, it might be a bit cheap to do it that way, but it beats having to go into combat mode every time you encounter that enemy whenever you visit the same location)
Just a few good to know things for future use, hope you enjoy the game and become one of us "glittering gems of hatred". :) (for those unfamiliar with the term, it was given to the hardcore fanbase of the two fallouts by someone at Something awful)

Can Someone explain the world map to me?
How to use it properly?
Where I should or should not consider going until I level up?
Is this the world world of Fallout 2?
Thanks

Just as you are leaving Arroyo you should see a green circle in the map, this indicates a point of interest, be it a settlement (when its large enough to fill the grid its standing on) or a mine or cave(you will see some of this smaller green circles when you talk around the first town, Klamath, about a trapper that got lost)
When you want to travel to one of this locations in the map, you left click on it and your character should start walking towards it. Be advised that since you are on foot, chances are you get into a random encounter, wich should appear as a lightning bolt icon over your current location. This should force you into an action sequence depending of the type of encounter you bump into. Not every single encounter is initially a hostile one, so be sure to hold your fire until you see someone attacking you.
Once you reach your destination, you can click on yourself (that inverted green triangle) wich means you want to access the current location.
Thats about it. as you go around and gather new locations, they will show in a quick bar in the right of the map, this helps you navigating around by clicking on one of them. Your character should start walking towards it.
Later in the game, you can aquire some means of transportation, wich are faster, less prone to encounters and stylish ;)
I'll leave those for you to find out.
Have a nice game!

What McDondo said. Also, don't wander south-west of Arroyo just yet - unless you're impossibly (and I mean IMPOSSIBLY) lucky, you will die pretty damn quickly ;)

lol, I have been finding that I die fairly quickly no matter where I go! :oP
Yeah, the random encounters can be pretty rough.
The best thing to do is makes sure you get all the quests done in the first area (all the exp you can get after all) and then and then inch your way over to the next town... if I find myself getting killed a lot I choose a small amount of movement on the world map(like 3/4 of a square at a time). if I make it there with no encounters I save and do it again... it's longer then just clicking the next city and traveling the whole distance but it's less likely to get encountered and killed. Not all encounters are bad though... Just most of them lol
Once you make it to the first city to will be able to quest some and lvl as well as get your first NPC, sulik, to assist. Makes surviving a little easier.
