I adore fallout 1 and 2 (played on steam, just got into GoG for the community scene because I've lurked for a while) and I was wondering whether people thought Tactics was good enough to validate playtime despite it not being canon. I know it's still fallout but I like a clear cut of whats going on in a franchise, perfect example is the Star Wars / Disney situation, I HATED extended universe no longer being canon because it felt like I wasted my time.

Validate playtime? What does that mean? If you get enjoyment from an activity, be it a game, sport, whatever, then it is 'valid' activity. As far as Tactics is concerned, I liked it but could never get far, purely because of the *insane* random encounters overland. I tried every 'fix' I could find, and nothing worked. I just gave up on it.
Didn't clarify, meant to ask whether it was as good as 1 & 2, I don't get much time out of work to play stuff so I have to make choices on what I play over the weekend. If it's as good as 1 & 2 I'll give it a shot, if not it can wait until the holiday's.

It's a different type of game. It's more of a direct military simulator, as you directly every soldier in a squad, move in on enemy positions, and coordinate attacks. There's more tactical options, like crouching or going prone, causing slowed movement but increased accuracy/dodge chance. Combat plays like you'd expect from Fallout, with the exception that you can switch to real-time instead of turn-based. I liked it to a fault. It's a fairly hardcore simulator. The enemy will mess you up if you don't play well. Think Jagged Alliance or XCOM.

As MadOverlord said, it's a very different game. It *is* good, or I should say the actual battles are good, but you will (if you're anything like the majority of players) get *very* frustrated by having random encounters every other step on the map. You can't get anywhere. It's a game breaker... for me at least.
Try it out. Don't expect it to be like Fallout 1 or 2 since it's a different game genre, but consider it an extension of the Fallout universe.

If you find the random encounter rate to be too high, then check the Fallout Tactics Redux mod at:
http://www.moddb.com/mods/fallout-tactics-redux
which lowers the encounter rate in many areas.

Also, have you checked out the recently released Fallout: Resurrection at http://resurrection.cz/en/, which works off the Fallout 2 engine and takes place between 1 and 2 in the timeline?

Brother you made my weekend, and thanks for the replies, I'll give it a shot but go into the mindset I went into the forced unleashed franchise with - not canon, but great fun. :)
