of course i was thrilled to see fallout 4 release DRM-free, but ive reinstalled the game several times now, and no matter what, the game crashes after a couple minutes.

has anyone else been struggling with this?

my rig is decent, and ive played the steam version with no problems, plenty of times.

i need to know if this is a widespread problem, or if theres a known fix for frequent crashes.

I was just waiting for these complaints to roll in. Fallout 4 has always been like this. The culprit is the Nvidia Weapon debris setting. Turn that completely off. All crashing should disappear, if not...also turn off God Rays. It's been an issue since day 1 actually.. Bethesda uses an Nvidia technology called FLEX. It works in conjunction with the weapon debris setting. Whenever Flex is called upon the GPU crashes. Basically, Bethesda used a beta version of the technology which is not compatible with drivers today, and they refuse to fix it.

Also....It's a major major issue on RTX cards.

You're welcome, friend.
Hopefully this is an issue that will be fixed in the coming next gen update.

This thread with this solution should be stickied.
Even though I have the Steam version it's been a while and I forgot all about this bug.
Thank you! You did us a great service.
I haven't tried this yet, but there's a mod that fixes the weapon debris issue by disabling collision detection from the debris.

It does work, but the way it's described to work basically means debris is not going through the ground anyway. I have no idea what it even looks like when it's working properly, but I noticed no difference between weapon debris with his mod, and weapon debris off. And could never keep it running long enough for weapon debris without the mod to find any difference.
If you have a RTX-GPU and Weapon Debris is enabled in the Launcher your game will crash for sure.

Solution 1:
Install Fallout 4 Script Extender F4SE (https://f4se.silverlock.org) and Weapon Debris Crash Fix (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/48078)

Solution 2:
Disable Weapon Debris in the Launcher; but this decision is accompanied by the ignominy of defeat!

Solution 3:
Todd Howard is your uncle and you can ask him to finally fix the game.

In french the setting is written as "Valeur des dégats", which is a totally wrong translation.

"Value of damage"? DDG and Google both pretty well agree on that . . . and yeah, horrible translation.

Thanks man! Did the trick!
Pretty sure that setting is off by default when you install the GoG version. Never had an issue with my F4 install on my RTX 4070 system. Later when I read about this, I checked the setting and it was off.

But I guess some people just like to max every setting.

I watched a YT video showing the difference on and off, and I don't really feel like I am missing anything having it off.
