I understand that this is a common problem but I just purchased the GOTY edition on GOG in thinking that it would work out of the box.

The launcher comes up but when I click "play" it switches to a smaller black screen and then just crashes. I have looked into my game folder and I do not have a Fallout.ini folder, I only have a Fallout_Default.ini

I have games for windows live downloaded on my PC as well.

Any help would be hot.
Remove the GfW-L! as that is not needed nor used anymore, especially not for GOG games but not for any other games either.

Did you have FO3 for Steam installed previously? Also, what are your system specs?

Okay! Bethesda just had it recommended so I was unsure

on bethesda or GOG?

GOG. I cannot give you a direct link as I do not have the game on GOG. I looked at the New Vegas support page and there were several things probably useful for Fallout 3 as well.
Do you have anything related to FO3 in your Documents > My Games folder? If you have a Fallout3 folder in My Games you should either back it up and/or delete it. Once it is deleted I need you to start FO3 from FalloutLauncher.exe, then go to Options and set everything to what you want. Make sure that your Resolution is listed and set to the correct one. If it does not show your resolution let me know because I had to manually set mine because 1920x1080 was not listed which caused issues. Once you have the graphics set to what you would like, hit OK and then hit PLAY. If you have any more problems let me know.

Holy Shit, that actually worked.
I almost gave up, I had the same issues that the OP had and starting from the launcher instead of GoG after deleting the stuff in the MyGames folder actually fixed it.
Thanks man

I am glad it worked for you. I do not know the reasons why, but the files that were made by the Steam version of the game do not work well with the GOG version. Plus one issue I had that only happened once was that the *.ini files made by the launcher were made incomplete. I had to delete all the *.ini files and have the launcher make them again, then they were complete.

Worked for me too, thanks. I have Steam versions, I just bought the GOG versions for the DLC.
This fix didn't work for me. I've deleted the Documents/MyGames/Fallout 3 folder from Steam, but the game still CTDs after clicking on "Play" in the launcher. I get a black screen with a light-color box in the upper left corner, then it's immediately back to desktop.
****EDIT****
The launcher has my resolution selectible (1920x1080). I click the button for "Ultra" settings, then close the options panel, click on "Play" ...

My specs: OS: Win 10 Pro CPU: Ryzen 9 3900X, RAM: 32GB DDR4, GPU: RTX 2080 SUPER, SSD: 90GB free space.

****UPDATE****
Deleting the .INI files from the Documents/MyGames/Fallout3 folder after opening the launcher, but before clicking on "Play" solved the issue!
