For some reason, the mouse movement is extremely slow on the Mac version of Fallout 2. Also, the game seems to run slowly on a 2.4Ghz i7 MBP.

Has anyone else encountered this as well?

The mouse movement is very slow and choppy? I haven't tried it yet but I've attempted to run Fallout 2 on the Mac with Wine wrappers before and they always have this problem.
It's not that it's choppy, just really slow, like the sensitivity is set waaaaay down. But that's ok because if I set it to max in the options it works fine. It's just that performance seems to be slow in general: screen tearing, slow movment, lagginess.
Perhaps you should try the CNC ddraw patch that Rhiyo recommends:
http://www.gog.com/forum/general/directdraw_fix_configurations

Or better yet, the hi-res mod and run it in DirectDraw7 as the mod sticky will point you to. You can also try Sfall.

I haven't tested it myself yet as I'm trying to avoid spoilers. Since the "Mac version" runs in a Wine wrapper, Wine should be able to handle all of these mods just fine, as it does with much of Windows software. I've used the CNC ddraw on Command & Conquer and the hires patch on Fallout 1 using Wineskin wrappers, so I have some familiarity with both.

I had this issue on my old 2006 MacBook, but then I downloaded it onto my 2012 iMac and it ran smoothly.

Of course it shouldn't take 8 GB RAM and a 3,4 GHz processor to run this game, so... I don't know what to say.

However I have run into some other issues. I don't think its 100% compatible with the latest OS for Mac. I get a weird error message whenever I play it. It doesn't effect gameplay as far as I can tell (I only ever notice the error message when I quit).

Also there has been a weird error message I've encountered recently in Modoch when I use dynamite on the chicken coop. The weird thing is it looks like a PC error message, like the actual window that pops up is on a PC.

So yeah, that's been my experience so far.

Please write to our Support department about any and all issues with Fallout 2 on Mac. The more info we get from you guys (hardware etc.) the better the chances that we can find the cause of the problem and fix it. Thanks :D.

Screenshots help as well so please take them if possible whenever something weird pops up...well, weirder than one of those Radscorpions who know how to play chess :D.

You're running it in a wrapper (that GOG used to allow the Windows version of Fallout 2 to run on Mac) which simulates a Windows environment, so the 'PC error' message is expected. You may want to try different settings in Wineskin (right-click on your game and choose "Show package contents" then click Wineskin to run the setup). But it's quite likely that you're running into a weakness in the game's original code, or possibly a deficiency in Wine itself. Try applying some of the mods in the Sticky (you can apply them just as you would on Windows).

GOG does offer that this wrapper should work on modern Macintosh systems, so taking it up with them is probably the best place to start. Check out the Porting Team or WineHQ if you're looking for some advice from a community of WINE users and they might be able to point you to a solution sooner, though. Share any fixes you receive back here on GOG when you're done of course ;)

Well I figured out one of the problems. I guess the newest version of mountain lion does have a driver used for the game or something (I might be getting some of this wrong, I'm not super computer savvy - it's why I have a Mac in the first place), anyway I downloaded XQuartz or whatever one of the messages told me to do, so I haven't been getting that same error message every time I run the game (which never seemed to affect gameplay btw).

As far as the other thing I encountered, I tried to replicate it, but it didn't happen this time. I'll keep my eye out for anything though.

To be honest though, I'm in the process of installing Windows 7 via Bootcamp anyway (would have done so already, but didn't know I needed a blank CD for the drivers), so I can play all the other games that aren't compatible with Mac, so in the future I'll probably be downloading games for the OS they were originally made for.

Update:

Game crashed on me again (luckily immediately after I saved). Same PC style error messages popped up.

Wouldn't let me take a screen shot as everything froze up, so I took pictures with my phone.

If you can't make it out, the first one says:

"Application Error: C:\Program Files\\Fallout 2\fallou...

The intructrion at 004af46a referenced memory at 01dd8074
The memory could not be read from

Click OK to terminate the application"

The second one reads:

"Program Error

The program has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

This can be caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in Wine. You may want to check for tips about running this application.

If this problem is not present under Windows and has not been reported yet, you can report it at "

I never did check out Wine like elus89 suggested, so I probably will not. I'll post updates if anything gets worked out.

Hi,

Please send all of that info to our Support department and your hardware information so we can diagnose this issue more effectively. Based on what I see here, the issue you are experiencing is too specific for us to be able to do anything via the forum. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

This is likely his configuration: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-i7-3.4-27-inch-aluminum-late-2012-specs.html

The referenced memory error in Fallout for Windows and Wine crashes are both fairly common. What's too specific to be able to do anything on the forums?
