I've played Fallout 2 several times before, and have never had this problem. When I speak to Jonny's dad, I'm not getting any dialog choices that lead to getting the quest to find Jonny. Even with my speech at 100%, when I ask him what has him preoccupied, he's not willing to tell me. I found his BB gun in the well, and found Jonny at the ghost farm, but still I can't seem to get the quest.
Any ideas?

How high is your charisma and or intelligence? Try to eat some Mentats and speak again to him. Maybe this works.

I'll try Mentats. Charisma and Intelligence are both at 6.
I tried loading my save game from when I first stepped into Modoc and using a character-editor to increase my Charisma to 10, but still the same problem. In my most recent save, I'm idolized in Modoc, so it's not my reputation either.
I'm guessing it's bug-related. I have the Fallout 2 Restoration Project installed, so that might be effecting it in some way.

According to a walthrough this is what's needed:
"To find this out you need PE 6, to offer to look for Jonny you need IN 6"
According to another this seems to be the way to get it:
"Talk to the dude in the general store, and take the haunted farm quest. Then go talk to Balthas the tanner, and ask about his problem"
Had to check walkthroughs as I couldn't remember what I did when I had the same problem with that quest.

It turns out that my IN 5 was the problem. Apparently, every time I've played previously, I've had at least IN 6. What a strange requirement. Thanks Rainstorm!

I agree, if your kid's missing your first thought would most likely not be, "I wish someone would help me find him, but it must be someone with an above average IQ"... :)
