I don't really want to buy both games at the moment and would simply like to know which one you think is better.
Fallout 1, as is only because in Fallout 2 you play as the descendat of the Fallout 1 protagonist.

Gameplay-wise I like FO2 better because it's a lot longer, there are more quests, more to do. I personally like it more, and that is the one I play whenever I want to go back to the Fallout universe. FO2 references events and characters in FO1 a fair bit, so even though knowledge of FO1 is not a prerequisite to play, it is highly recommended.

FO1 has a darker and more desperate feeling, less pop-culture references. I'd say play FO1, experience the game, see if it's something you enjoy. If you like it, you'll be back for FO2 in no time, and you'll be able to fully appreciate it having played the first installment. To be honest playing FO1 after FO2 feels a bit empty and (I know it sounds impossible) less polished.

One time in FO1 I got blocked in a corner by one of my NPCs and that was it, had to load an earlier save. FO2 conveniently added an option to push their stupid faces out of the way. ;)
FO1 is the beginning. But FO2 plays better.
And because your action in FO1 doesn't change the setting of FO2 i would prefer FO2.
Fallout 2 is better and bigger but you should still start with the first one.
I find Fallout 1 has the better storyline but Fallout 2 is much more refined

If you can only get 1 or only want to get 1 of the games I'd suggest Fallout 2 as it plays better than the original. In the longer term though I would advise you to play both.
I preferred Fallout 1. Really excellent story, game is not too long not too short.

Fallout 2 is very similar in terms of gameplay, experts can tell the differences not me ;)
(I noticed they removed bags in the inventory, why???)
Bigger world, but the story is not as good as the first.

I have the impression that old timers prefer Fallout 2 because it has maybe a better replayability, but for a first playthrough, Fallout 1 is definitely the one IMO.
I suggest playing Fallout 1 first, to start the story off right and get acquainted. It's more basic than 2 but still a great game!
First the one then the other ;) It would be a mistake to skip 1. After you are done with it you will be glad that you still have the sequel ahead of you. Best rpgs I have ever played...
Fallout [1] is a great great game that every true gamer should play at some point in their life (even if you don't really enjoy RPGs in general like myself). I know FO2 is "better" when it comes to gameplay, but I digress Fallout has so many awesome badassery moments and it's just fun to play through the game over and over again because there are so many creative ways to make the game feel fresh and new each time! Sure you can go with the bigger game, FO2, first but then you'd be missing out on half of the Fallout potential for awesomeness and a rich over arching story that can only be experienced by starting with FO1 first.

Oh and one last thing, people really need to stop criticizing Fallout [1] for it having a time limit because that time limit goes away after completing the first major story related quest (use a guide if you can't figure it out, really) and then you have like 15 years or something to do the rest of the stuff in the game, and now I'm pretty slow and like to take my sweet time in games and not ONCE did I feel pressured for time, even when I had the 150 day limit to retrieve the waterchip, and certainly not when I made it to the end boss and completed the game. Honestly though I didn't even know there was a time limit after retrieving the waterchip! It's like there wasn't even a time limit at all! So please TC whatever you decide I just hope you and others don't avoid the original Fallout because of the "time limit" factor which has really given the game more of a bad rep than it deserved!

Fallout [1] RULES!!!!
If you're only going to buy one, then it should be Fallout 1. You'll want to get Fallout 2 as well eventually, however.

You're absolutely right. I remember when I first started playing I didn't know what to expect, I had no idea how long it would take to complete the quest, so the time limit was just an extra tension in the background to give you a sense of urgency rather than an actual exploration-limiting factor.

Exactly! I'll admit that I almost caved in and bought Fallout 2 because I heard so many complaints about the time limit in 1, but then I realized all the people who were complaining were those who skipped Fallout 1 and only played 2 :-P

Which is ironic, since F2 also has a time limit! I think it's 13 years, and people complained about that too!

I agree with you completely though - I'm one of those who was initially disturbed by the time limit, since I don't like to rush through things, but in both games this is only an issue if you want to power-level your character to crazy heights as opposed to just doing the quests as you encounter them.

Actually it makes more sense to complain about this in F2, since it's possible to continue playing the game after you actually win it (to get more random encounters etc) - and I think the game totally stops at that point. But I've never had the urge to play that long...

Also agree with other posters here - buy F1 first, then you'll almost certainly buy F2 after that. This is what I did, and although F2 is definitely the better game due to better character management and more quests and more locations and less bugs (mostly), F1 has a darker (in my view better) atmosphere, and I'm glad I played it first.

Fallout 1 highly recommended. Fallout 2 is a little harder to play since the beginning of the game you are basically naked and enemies can kill you with 2-3 hits.
