**************************************GOG FALLOUT 1 FAQ*****************************

welcome to my faq, this is version 1.

List of Contents
---------------------------------------------
section one - technical discussion
section two - game play related issues

*********************Section One**********************
Q. Is this the DOS version of the game?
A. Only For the Mac release, the Windows versions are the original Windows version.

Q. Getting "The instruction at 00e72023 referenced memory at 00000000
The memory could not be read?"
A. Change the name of ddraw.ini or rename falloutw.exe

Q. Will Fallout Work on Windows 98?
A. No, see this link

Q.Screen Sizing issues? Portion of the image drawn off screen?
A.Check out if your t.v. has something like copensate overscan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overscan for more info.

Q.Where are the save files located?
A.In Vista, when an old application without admin priviledges tries to write to a folder that it doesn't have permission for (like Program Files) then UAC, in order to allow the program to work, redirects the file to a special folder in your personal directory.

Check C:UsersusernameAppDataLocalVirtualStoreProgram Files

Link for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_Account_Control#Features

Q.Can't get Falche to load your saves?
A.Point Falche to the folder above your save game folder.
I.E. C:/windows/fallout instead of C:/windows/fallout/save

Q.Fallout is slow, Jittery, or otherwise graphically impairing..
A.Try renaming ddraw.dll, as this fixes most graphical issues.

Q.Game unexpectedly Quits with a Language Patch
A.1. copy the original "text" and "art" folders somewhere.
2. move the folders from the spanish translation into the fallout folder.
3. copy the original back into Fallout and say yes to overwriting existing files.

Q.Enemy is outside of main play area (offscreen)
A.One other solution, *maybe*, could be to grab the high res. patch and set the .ini to ignore map limits, that way you should be able to go "outside the screen" and then maybe you can see and shoot him. (if the NPC crashes the game when attacking you might want to tell them to leave before trying this though) You need to change "IGNORE_MAP_EDGES = 0" to a 1.

Q.Can't find Screenshots?
A.The screenshot is saved in BMP format in your Fallout1/2 folder. Look for scr00000.bmp

Q.Game Crashes?
A.Try installing the latest fan made patch.
http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=1075

Q.Game won't start?
A.Try closing ATi Tray Tools.

Q. Funky Colors?
A. If your system is similar to this, HDMI Monitor, but running through a videocard that is currently sending DVI Video through your HDMI Monitor. Also this relates to a OS that is Vista 64 Ultimate with 4 gigs of Ram.
You'll want to right click your shortcut, go to properties, then compatibility tab and check disable display scaling on high DPI settings (thanks zolop)

DrColossus: Q: I get the error "Cannot start 640x480 video mode" on startup, what gives?

If you get the error "Cannot start 640x480 video mode" (or similer) after installing a high res patch, ensure the custom resolution you set in the config file is in 4:3.
Q. Cannot Access The Exit Zone on the Map?
A. Try editing the F1_ini file to use a set resolution

Q. Cannot run in 640x480?
A. There are multiple answers for this, you can edit your F1_ini, delete ddraw.dll, run as administrator, rename falloutw.exe, make sure your resolution is set to 4:3, and set it to run in 640x480 mode via the shortcut.

************************************SECTION TWO (spoilers)********************************

Q.Assassin won't attack Killian?
A.Kill the assassin anyway, nothing bad will happen, if it does, you'll spend a night in jail, that's all.

Q.You don't get the experience at the bottom of Vault 15 for finding the hole has been closed up.
A.Your perception stat isn't high enough.

Q.Can't Use Targeted Shots?
A.You took Fast Shot as a Perk

mcfeher: Q: Why do I die after leaving the Glow?
A: You took too many REMs, my friend. If you have bought or found a Geiger Counter, equip it and click "USE" after you've been wandering the Glow for a while. This will tell you how much radiation you've sucked up. If the number is up over 1,000, you're doomed. One foot in the grave. Walking Dead.

The effects of radiation exposure are delayed, so the full damage doesn't kick in for hours or days. What happens is that all of your Stats take a hit. If any of them drop to zero, you will die. At the 1,000 REMs+ level, you lose -6 ST, -5 PE, -5 EN, -5 CH, -3 IN, -6 AG. If all your stats were high enough to stay positive after taking that hit, you'd be okay. Depending on your stats, you might be able to use buffing drugs to prevent immediate death.

You can use Rad Away, but that will only take away 150 over the course of 4 hours. You're unlikely to have enough of them to deal with the level or radiation you receive in just a short time in the Glow. What you need to do is take 2 doses of Rad-X to put your Radiation Resistance over 100%. Note that your companions (Dogmeat, Ian, etc.) are never affected by things like Radiation or Poison.
Q. I heard about X quest in a FAQ but after speaking to some of the people involved, I still didn't get the quest.
A. Continue looking at that FAQ, there may be more you need to do. I.E. Rescuing Tandi; it's an optional quest, but helpful if you do not return her to shady sands (you get more information after visiting the raiders camp and returning to shady sands).

Q. I spoke to the guy outside the brother hood of steel and he sent me on a quest to get this item, but I just picked the lock on the place instead and I got in. Is there anything bad that can come of this?
A. not really, it's designed to let you lock pick the doors of the BoS. Although it is more beneficial imo to get their item, it's still entirely possible to have it work the way you described and imo is how the developers intended it.

AesirRising: Q: What version of Fallout is available from GOG?
A: Version 1.2 released worldwide. It incorporates some minor dialog fixes, as well as removes children avatars from the game, similar to the U.K. official release.

Paul_cz: Ok, after two hours of reading websites and readmes I finally installed The Ultimate Version of Fallout .

The procedure goes as following:

1) Install Fallout 1 from GOG.com
2) Find and install "Fallout_1_TeamX_Patch_ENG_1.2w" (either via nma or just google)
3) Install "f1child_patch" (again, nma)
4) Install "fallup13" - this is the TeamX patch 1.3.4 (nma)
5) Install "f1npcmod" from TeamX (again, nma)
6) Install "sfall1" (from http://timeslip.chorrol.com/sfall.html)
7) Install "Fallout1_High_Resolution_Patch_v1.3" (nma)
8) Open f1_res and set AUTO_SCRN_SIZE = 0, then your desired resolution (I use 800*600, anything above is just too darn small for my taste), then if you want, change the way ingame movies work, either fullscreen or not....up to you.Same with movie subtitles.

Run the game and enjoy it in all of its patched glory, WITH KILLABLE KIDS (not that I ever kill them, but the option is here), with better NPC interaction (armors, levelling..), with tweaks like mousewheel in the inventory etc, in higher resolution...

The Ultimate Fallout Experience awaits.
I have not verified the above works, but if it does, it should be the most playable version of the game.

I took all my questions and answers from previous posts in the community, so yes this is in my opinion a community effort. I'll take whatever help I can get.

Not exactly certain, answers were compiled from answers marked as solved, and the poster didn't give many details.
What was happening was some sort of video error where the video drivers were trying to force a mode (like rotation, higher resolution, or some of that wonderful smart processing), that was keeping the game from starting.

Thanks. I'm having an odd resolution problem, and I am running ATI Tray Tools, so I'll turn that of and see what difference it makes.

Oh man, a FAQ. Thanks. Needs to be stickied for everybody.
Hi Weclock, great idea with this.
Any plans for one on fallout 2?

mootrix: Hi Weclock, great idea with this.
Any plans for one on fallout 2?

I have not yet organized my thoughts on this, I see more issues relating to Fallout 1 than 2 and also, I have not yet played much of FO2 (haven't even completed the trial area!), so I'm not leaning towards it now. If anyone else wants to do one, shoot for it.

Any updates on this?
Also, I updated the main post with your solutions.. (to whom it applies) with the Quotations on them. Hopefully Quotes won't completely mess with that post, but who knows. Anyway, it is to keep it so people don't have to flip through pages (if it gets that long, it'll be nice to have it all in one place!).

AGain, more updates.

A question, does anyone think I could somehow clear up the formatting a bit? I'm not satisfied with it but unsure how to properly format this.

Q. I heard about X quest in a FAQ but after speaking to some of the people involved, I still didn't get the quest
Certain quests are not available until you reach a specific point in the game - like the Water Thief quest in Vault 13 - or another, related quest has been completed. Others may require certain pre-requisites in terms of your stat or skill levels, which your current character might not fufill.
(note: This is from my memory - but should be correct)
