I played Fallout for the first time a few weeks ago and loved it. I thought the story was awesome and really love how organic the world felt. I was blown away when I went to Necropolis to talk to some ghouls only to find them being slaughtered by the super mutants! It was terrifying.

Now I'm playing Fallout 2 but I don't know if I want to get further into it. I've done some quests (saved Chrissy, helped Torr) which were neat quests but I'm disappointed in the dialog. I am not thrilled in The Chosen One's sarcastic dialog options and it's taking away from the experience for me. Does the game remain like this throughout? It seems like The Chosen One has his own personality regardless of the way I've created them. Is there a way to open up the dialog? I have 9 or 10 charisma and speech over 100% already. My favorite part of Fallout was how gritty and immersive it was. It was campy and over the top but believable whereas Fallout 2 so far is kind of whacky and ridiculous, which is fine, but it's moreso than it is serious.
Not sure what you're on about... Don't like it - don't play it ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

No idea what is it you're not liking up to now, but there's a whole (vast) game of dialogues ahead.

F2 is a different game than F1. The atmosphere differs in both games. There's a lot of people who don't like F2 despite the fact that they loved F1. Both games have exactly the same graphics, but In the first you feel the world is a lot more desolated. I guess F1 appeals more to your liking. That's perfectly fine. I personally like F2 more.
If you feel like doing something different in F2:
You start off at the trial. The last part is a fight with a human opponent. Run away. Then come back and initiate combat. Kill him. Whatch how the village reacts...........

Oh! Greetings, spritual brother! Most of the people don't come to this conclusion.
The harsh truth is that further it will become even worse. If you have enough patienсe you'll relatively soon reach less tribalized part of FO2's wasteland and witness that it's different from the wasteland of the FO1 completely. As explained one of the developers the whole tribal thing was intended as a joke, sick...

Now the historical reference. There was a old game Wasteland by Brian Fargo. It was relatively simple and full of not very intricate humor. That looked good at time and age. Plenty of years since then Fallout 1 had a destiny to become the next Wasteland. But we were very fortunate to have Leonard Boyarsky as lead game designer. He argued with Fargo, moderated most of the stupid humor, declined absurd comic relieves. As a result balance between humor and seriousness in the Fallout 1 reached the "golden proportion".
When came a time for Fallout 2 to be developed, Boyarsky tired of the whole thing with conflicts between him and Fargo. of the mismanagement of Interplay and left when the main story was about 33% completed. And without him as a restraining factor grown in numbers studio lead by Fargo made what they made. They added a number of questional event and referencies just to make a laugher. Humor at the level between a toilet one and cartoonic one They made lore of the game controversial because some of the new employee involved into the dialog creation just were not aware about the lore and events of the previous game...
Unfortunately most of the Fallout community fine with that because they either started to play from FO2 and got improper personal imprinting or expected exactly sequels of old Wasteland from these games.
And, what is more unfortunate, there are no mods which make FO2 back into Boyarsky style. It's just too much work.

I will not recommend you to drop the game right now. Continue it at least down to Broken Hills and the decide for yourself. But be prepared to be disappointed even more.

Yes, the tone is certainly different. You have to be in the mood for whackiness for the second game. There is also Tactics.

Thank you for all of this info, that's really interesting.

There is one more not very popularized fact about FO2.
It's production has been happening in parallel with production of Planescape: Torment. And the most experienced member of the studio, who worked earlier on FO1, had been reassigned to work on PS: T. And you really feel that while playng those to games. PS: T, despite being a game from the different setting and "universe", and even from the different subgenre, from the first moments has the same grasp on player as FO1. That kind of game which makes you to spend several hours on it even if you initial intention was to just check it for dozen of minutes.
So, FO2 was stripped of the most of the team which made it's predecessor during development stage. That greatly increased degree of the quality drop since the second game became notably larger.

Playing through 2 for the first time at the moment. Yes, it's campy. The fourth wall gets broken in a million different ways, and there is a lot more funny dialogue. However, I think that the quests in general are written better, the companions are much more believable, and there are a lot of possible approaches. I suggest you play it a bit more before dropping it.
This aspect of Fallout 2 has been bothering me since I've played it for the first time. There's just too many references and jokes around and makes the game feel unfocused. It's just all over the place and is missing such memorable characters as the Master from the first game. I still think it's a very good game, but it's nowhere near the first one. I remember seeing one review of Fallout 2 that summarised the game quite well: it seems like its a collection of ideas in the vein of "wouldn't it be cool if...".
