I lost the contents of one or another container. So far as I can tell from an extended search of the game's various inventories, including shops, the fob dropped off the face of the earth.
How does one usually handle this? I can find nothing to do from within the game.

Edit: By the way, I'm nearly certain the item lost was in the car's trunk. Yes, I should have known better...

Try to use a savegame editor, like this one, to change a object in your inventory to Fob. Make a backup of your SAVEGAME folder, just for precaution. There's also another way, but it's a bit complex, and it could corrupt your savegame, so it's not a good idea.
That sounds immensely helpful, and I'm apt to take a shot at it.
That said, I would like to know the other method if only out of curiosity, and whether it's still risky if one backs up one's saves.
If I backed up my saves better, this wouldn't have been a problem...

If I backed up my saves better, this wouldn't have been a problem...
For example:
I have a old savegame, and my character has nice equipment (Adv. Power Armor, and good weapons).
Image

And I just started a game with another character.
Image

Let's say I want to receive some equipment from my old savegame. I load the game and put some items on the ground.
Image

Now make a backup of your savegame folder, so if something goes wrong, you have how to recover your save files.

Now, enter in the save slot folder of your old save game, and copy the file containing the city info where you droped the items (in this case, KLADWTWN.SAV).
Image

See if you have that same file in the other folder (you can copy that file only, if you don't want to make a backup of all the folders).
Image

Now, overwrite the file with the one you copied from the other folder (SLOT08, in this case).
Image

Load the game, and you'll see the items there, on the ground.

Equip yourself, and be happy!

You can use this method to recover your Fob, if you have a earlier save with it in your inventory.
Just be careful with some things, if you want to do this:

* Don't save with your character in the location that will change (that the items will be "teleported" to). This will corrupt your savegame.

* Not only the items you put there will appear in the other save, everything you did in this location too. For example, in the other save (the one I have a big party and Power Armor), I completed all missions there (in Klamath downtown), so in my new save, everyone will treat me like if I had completed these missions too, so I won't be able to do them. For that reason, I only reccomend doing this in cities you already have done everything, so you won't lose the opportunity to do the missions.

This trick is useful also, in the situations where you can't go to "X" place, because the game freezes, or by other bug. You copy the city files from other savegame, and *TADAM*, now you can walk in the place, again. : )

I tried to explain clearly, tell me if you have any doubts.
Very cool beans! Thank you!
