I haven't played Fallout on my Mac in about 18 months, probably since I was using 10.9. In my pre-Fallout 4 hype, I tried to play Fallout the other day and get the dreaded error "Failed to activate core services." Anyone figure out a way to play the game with the current versions of OS X?

Honestly, this is probably something GOG itself should address, given how many Mac users update their OS yearly.

According to many Mac users, currently the only way to make games under Wine to work again is to disable the System Integrity Protection.

1. Reboot the Mac and hold down Command + R keys simultaneously after you hear the startup chime, this will boot OS X into Recovery Mode.
2. When the “OS X Utilities” screen appears, pull down the ‘Utilities’ menu at the top of the screen instead, and choose “Terminal”.
3. Type the following command into the terminal then hit return:
csrutil disable; reboot
4. You’ll see a message saying that System Integrity Protection has been disabled and the Mac needs to restart for changes to take effect, and the Mac will then reboot itself automatically, just let it boot up as normal.

You can check the SIP status issuing this command into the terminal:
csrutil status
Wineskin recently did an update that sorta fixes El Capitan but you gotta use the latest Wrapper version (and engines, maybe). It's possible to do this manually on your own but it'd be more convenient for everyone if GOG did it for us.

I have no idea of how to update the wine wrapper on my fallout an fallout2 games and launching either one i get:

The application X11 could not be opened.
An error occurred while starting the X11 server: "Failed to activate core devices."

Click Quit to quit X11. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.

i am guessing that X11 is wine and i really done want to turn off any of the anti virus anti malware that apple has built into OS X 10.11.x

why does not GOG update the wine wrappers on any games that use them and let us know we need to redownload?
i signed up to getting games here just so i would not have to learn all this arcane it stuff

if gog won't do the right thing and do this update properly then is there aster by step guide for computer idiots like me and am i right in guessing this wine update process to get the gog versions of old games to run on OS X 10.11.x will need to be done for each game?

They haven't had time yet? All Wine wrapped Mac releases on GOG use Wineskin, and they need to update & test each of them. Hopefully we will see updates start rolling out this week.

Sadly, two weeks later and only 9 days away from Fallout 4, and these gems are still unplayable as-is on curent Macs. When I was younger I'd have had no compunction about diving in and doing what it takes to hack something together to make then run again but really, should I have to? I've been a great fan of GOG over the years but this is their responsibility, it seems to me. They're still distributing these games with no disclaimer - so far as I've seen - that they won't run on 10.11.

Come on GOG, fix this please!

Should you have to? Probably not, but it doesn't look terrible. Assuming it then just works for you. I would have thought GOG would have some of the updated builds out by now.

It has begun. Now to see how long until they reach the Fallouts.

Are they going to do this or not? Can anyone confirm?
I played both Fallout 1 and 2 when they came out and was watching streams on Twitch the other day. Would like to play these again, but already upgraded to El Capitan.
Everything runs without system int.protection

You just need update wineskin

I have installed F (also F2, FT) opened directory with files and run wineskin

In wineskin oped wrapper tools and update wrapper

UPDATED
To run game press TEST RUN at wineskin advanced menu
all preferences and save games will be saved in TEST RUN

Seems to be today. Fallout 1 & 2 Mac installers updated with new Wineskin, but no flag or changelog.

1) Try to download it again.
$ md5sum
d0c1b25e6fa2cd021b2df81b3f87f0df fallout_2.0.0.7.dmg

2) Despite the error message try this:
Game "can't be opened because it was not downloaded from the Mac App Store" error message
a) System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> unlock to make changes -> select Mac App Store and identified developers.
or
b) Right-click (or cmd-click) the game -> Open -> confirm Open.
3) Solution #1 from the FAQ.

Thank you very much!
It works with Runaway 2.
