Hello,

With the upcoming increase in price I'm tempted to buy this game. However, I can't decide between buying the game on gog (which I'd preferably do) or on the developer's website.
It's pointed out that the gog version comes with an upgrade key, allowing to activate it on the developer's website. Afaik, the website offers a DRM-free version and allows for a steam key, BUT as stated on their faq page:

Yes, that is possible. After you have bought the game you can connect it to your Steam account at your profile page and then have your Steam key emailed to you. The linking to the Steam account is an anti-fraud mechanism. So what does this "upgrade key" exactly do?
Will I get the steam version as well if I buy it on gog and activate it on the developer website?
Is the DRM-free version multiplayer compatible (without a factorio account)?

I'd appreciate if someone, ideally someone owning this game, could clarify this for me.

Buying from GOG will give you access to the DRM-free GOG version and the DRM-free devs site version.
Buying from the devs site will give you access to DRM-free devs site version and the Steam version.

All versions have multiplayer, for LAN you don't need an account, but you do need a factorio account for online multiplayer (Which I would recommend even if you buy from GOG).

I would recommend buying from GOG (unless you really want the Steam version) and getting a Factorio account for online multiplayer or getting updates as soon as they're released.

EDIT: Online multiplayer is handled by Factorio's servers, and so you can play with people who own any copy of the game.

Okay thanks for clarification.

I'll probably grab it fromt he dev's website then. There's no point in having 2 (partly-)DRM-free copies of the game and I need an account there anyway, so I'll rather get a Steam-key instead :-/

The purchase on the website is done using the HumbleBundle widget thing, and I also got the game in my HumbleBundle Library although technically purchased from a 3rd party retailer (HumbleBundle). However, it is unclear what had happened if I had bought it in the HumbleBundle store itself...

Right, and as far as buying it on Humble goes it's shrouded in mystery. But GOG is definitely a 3rd party retailer and you definitely don't get a Steam key if buying it here.

the key is at the very top of the web browser.
1) Hover the mouse on your user name.
2) Click on Games
3) Find Factorio on your list of game, click on the downward facing Chevron.
4) Click where it says downloads.
5) Click on the downward chevron next to where is says More
6) Click on Serial Key. That is the Serial key you will need on the developer website.

Raise a Gog support ticket - they should be able to follow it up with the Factorio team.
