Chiming in, same thing. 3 missions failed so far trying to fix things :(

I'm going to work on it tomorrow. I haven't done a terrible amount of troubleshooting.

If someone can post step by step instructions for editing that cosbox config I'd appreciate it. I try to start the GOGDOSConfig.exe in the F-117 directory (C:\GOG Games\F-117A Nighthawk Stealth Fighter 2.0\DOSBOX) and it says run DOSBox Config from the start menu. I do that and it doesn't have the sbtype= or oplmode= described. I added them anyway, but I'm too tired to do another mission atm.

As for the possible DOSBOX SVN fix, no idea how to even start that. I'm pretty new to DOSBOX so...

The file you want is dosboxF117A.conf, located in C:\GOG Games\F-117A Nighthawk Stealth Fighter 2.0\

Open it up in a text editor, and search for "sbtype" and "oplmode" (they're right next to each other), and make your changes.

Its good practice to make a backup copy of a config file when you're editing it. Just call the original dosboxF117A_old.conf or something like that.

You'll know it worked if you no longer hear any digital voices.

Psychotropic: I've been getting the same issue, which seems to only occur when I get the "cleared for landing" message.

Every time it's crashed it's been when using Roland sound and only when I get that one message. However, the only time I've actually landed(usually something goes wrong and I restart or I end up crashing while trying to land and having to redo the entire mission to get another practice shot at it) I don't think I actually got the message at all. Either way, I was using Ad-Lib that time with no apparent issues. Next time I finish a mission I'll report back about whether or not using Ad-Lib audio fixed it, either by not playing the "cleared for landing" message at all or by simply not having the issue.
When I use the Roland sound I cannot get past the Ready Room. I go to select the type of mission and the game immediately takes me out of that room back to the Ready Room. The Ad Lib sound option works best for me, except that when it says "Cleared for landing" the game crashes. I will try the config option listed above. I never needed the control voice anyway.

BINGO !!
That got it.
I changed the config file as you suggested and flew my mission and the as I approached the carrier the game did not crash. Fortunately, neither did I. It has been 20 years since I played the game. I am still getting a muffled voice, like bad ear pieces, but it does not crash the game.

Thank all of you for your help.
You can also try updated to the Dosbox Daum build from http://ykhwong.x-y.net/ I have using it with digital speech enabled and I get no crashes*
(individual experience may vary)
To me it seems GOG took the basic cd version of this game, bundled it with DOSBOX and said, here you go!!

I'm not bashing GOG, I love GOG, but I want to explain why I say this. I still own the original cd that was a 2 game bundle. F-15 Strike Eagle II and F-117A. The file to install basically creates a JETS folder, which is then run from a JETS.EXE file, which is a frontend that shows a picture of both games side by side, and you click on whichever one you want to play.

I don't think the JETS executable file calls for the cd once it's installed to the HDD, but I couldn't even get F-15 to run. With this JETS version of F-117A, it has the digital voice, and for me, it crashes as the exact same spot as the GOG version does, cleared for landingdingdingdingdingdingdingding.

The other thing is, there is another F-117A, same game as this one, but on it's own cd, and it's not bundled with any other games and has no frontend program. That one was install, run F-117A executable and in game during a mission, I never remember hearing a digital voice and I always ran in Ad-lib but I had a Sound Blaster Pro sound card, way way back in the 90's.

What is really strange is, if you run the game with IBM sound, that's the PC speaker sound, the digital voice is still there and still sounds like an Ad-lib voice. In IBM sound, the only voices should only be coming from the PC speaker, and a digital voice that sounds that good, number one would never sound that good coming through the PC speaker and two, even if a digital voice did come through the PC speaker, it shouldn't crash the game, but again, a digital voice as sophisticated sounding as this one is, would never sound that good with IBM sound.

Anyway, GOG did reply to my support question with the mention of the solution here in the forum. So yep, I'm another who absolutely loves F-117A, and I too have it crashing.

I'll try the fix mentioned, and see how that goes for me.
Sorry to dig up old threads but I too had the same problem as some of you, where it would crash with sb16 enabled.
I tried the suggested SVN Daum build from ykhkwong.x-y.net

All I did was paste the SVN Daum "DOSBox.exe" into the "DOSBOX" folder inside the F-117A game folder and set "dosboxF117A.conf" options to:

sbtype=sb16
oplmode=opl3

And now it works with digital speech.

Thanks for the tips!

The problem is the Disney Sound Source, the solution is to switch it off. The most current Dosbox SVN versions (like Daum) do that by default so there will be no trouble.
If still you get crashes - for whatever reason, not only sound - then change the Core to Dynamic and maybe increase the Memory numbers in multiple of 16.
