Hi

I'm having trouble playing Microprose's F-117A. The game seems to run in general, but the first time I played it, it froze immediately before takeoff. Ever since then, I'm able to take off, but the game freezes every time right after lowering the landing gear at the end of the mission. All freezes seem to occur right after the digital voiceover announces takeoff/landing so I think it might be related.

Nobody else seems to have mentioned this on the forum though and GOG.com don't show this as a known bug, so I'm wondering if anybody else is having this problem too? Does anybody have any idea how to resolve it? I could try playing with the other sound modes, but I'd like to stick with Adlib if possible.

Thanks :)

Actually it is a known bug with this version of F-117A via dosbox, I submitted the patch to GOG informing them of this but they said this crash did not occur to them. there is a solution its to use a DOSBOX SVN version.
Thanks for your reply. I had a look around on forums and I can confirm what you said from the Vogons forums. It seems the bug is known and that the current Dosbox source has been corrected to resolve this issue.

Is there a specific patch you sent to them? If so, could you provide more information on what it was or how to get it? I'll contact GOG with it. Now that two of us have had the same issue, it's clear that it's not a one-off.

There is also a workaround for this issue that I should post. It involves editing the dosboxF117A.conf file in the game directory and changing a couple of options. The original shows the following settings:-

sbtype=sb16
oplmode=auto

Changing them to the following removes the crashes, although you lose the speech too.

sbtype=none
oplmode=opl2

I sent them the current 473.03 patch and even made a version until GOG updated their build with it.
There is a patch that's the same as the version you listed but it still doesn't work. Same issue.

Edit: So I went ahead and got the SVN and copied the files in. Works fine now. Silly computers.

Just wanted to chime in that I am also experiencing this exact issue. So that makes at least three of us with the same problem.

There is a problem, in my case, game freezes when voice announce "clear to landing".
I've contacted GOG about this matter and referred them to this post. Hopefully now a few of us have the same issue, it'll be resolved officially.
My crash happens when I destroy the Primary Target.

"Primary Target HitHitHitHitHit....."

have to ctl+alt+del to exit out and close task.
I'll give this thread a bump, because I'm also having the same issues with the digital speech. Majority of mine are happening at the beginning of the mission - "Cleared for takeoff" - but I have experienced it at landing and at destruction of the primary target. Here's hoping for a more 'official' patch to avoid some of the workarounds.
I've been getting the same issue, which seems to only occur when I get the "cleared for landing" message.

Every time it's crashed it's been when using Roland sound and only when I get that one message. However, the only time I've actually landed(usually something goes wrong and I restart or I end up crashing while trying to land and having to redo the entire mission to get another practice shot at it) I don't think I actually got the message at all. Either way, I was using Ad-Lib that time with no apparent issues. Next time I finish a mission I'll report back about whether or not using Ad-Lib audio fixed it, either by not playing the "cleared for landing" message at all or by simply not having the issue.
I've got the same issue - I run through the training mission, and the game freezes when I read the landing strip and hear the digital voice.

I've written to support, I will share what they say.
I have the same problem as the rest of you, CLEARED FOR LANDING crashes back to desktop with the sound popping. I contacted support.
Same. Crashes as soon as i hear "cleared for landing" speech.

I haven't tried changing the dosbox cfg or the SVN builds yet. I'm hoping other people will try them first and report back (so I don't have to spend 20 minutes playing a mission until it's time to land)

So I heard back from support. They said:

"Hello

Please try the advice given in the forum thread you link or uninstall the game and install it without applying the patch.

I did the Saxon247 fix to my dosbox config:

sbtype=none
oplmode=opl2

which got rid of the digital speech and the crashes. The speech was pretty bad anyway, IMO. Oh well!
