I know the devout zealots always trip balls and prognosticate the end of GOG when it comes to multiplayer, but this game is outright impossible in SP. Not to mention a thoroughly painful slog. Surely LAN play is at least a possibility without the Steam infrastructure?

I have 210 hours on the original Steam version and I promise anyone looking at this, the single player is not impossible.
So few shooters these days with good campaigns actually have full campaign co-op. It is truly a shame for that component to be missing in this version of the game.

Playing competitively against random strangers online? No thanks.
Playing cooperatively with friends and family over LAN or online? Yes please! This is what we need. I am disappointed that it is missing in the GOG version. I would have instantly bought it, but for now, I'll just wait and see.

While I understand the reason why there's no multiplayer functionality, I would be happier with this purchase if there was a little more effort made to "remake" the LAN component as a feature for this release.

That said, I'm not trying to make light of any efforts that would be required to do this, but if I have to pay extra for it, I wouldn't mind at this point (especially since they already specifically marketed this as a "singleplayer-only" version).
Seriously, no multiplayer makes this release worth FAR less. I'd kill for a definitive multiplayer-included version of E.Y.E that doesn't require janky setup to get multiplayer running -- the multiplayer of this game is half the reason to play it. There's nothing else remotely like multiplayer E.Y.E. I'd have taken this around to all my friends who haven't played it yet and gone "Yo, you should totally try this now, it's way easier to do multiplayer". Hint hint, Streum On. There's simply no reason not to at least leave LAN in and allow us to use extenders to make online multiplayer possible.

It's been a long time since I messed with source engine games, but is anything stopping someone from just starting/joining from the console?

I bought a copy here to look at it, since I figured they probably didn't go too deep to block lan.. but I haven't installed on a second machine to test

sv_lan 1
maxplayers 8
map warp

once you load in in the console it should list an internal network ip
and then have a second user connect using

connect <ip>

you can also go into
GoG Dir \ E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy \ EYE \ resource \ GameMenu.res

with notepad and uncomment out the other main menu entries. you could probably get the menu buttons to make a connect by ip button appear, and make the continue button not just a solo server

I'll bet this is because how many people complained about Hitman having most of its content require online.

Completely unrelated.

It seems absurd to prevent LAN play. LAN doesn't require steamworks or steam infrastructure.

I should have qualified that statement. Outright impossible in SP unless you pour over the guides and/or cheese it with exploits. If you expect to just fire this game up and have fun, you won't. Instead, you will waste hours before you realize your build is hopelessly screwed and have to restart the game. Coop alleviates that for those who don't have 210 hours to learn the ropes and find the fun in a game that punishes you for not having already done so.

The game mentioned required an Internet connection for most of the game. According to the post below yours this game isn't fun without other players. Had online been required for this would gamers want it?

I'm glad I was warned this isn't single player gaming friendly. I hate wasting even $4 on a game I won't enjoy.
Yeah once again GOG destroyed another perfectly fine LAN compatible game for no reason.

Same thing happened with DOOM 3 BFG Edition, just because they wanted no "online" multiplayer they simply deactivated the multiplayer menu button, makin even LAN inaccessible. (Luckily it can be reactivated by tinkering with the cfg files)

I guess this situation is similar and hopefully players find a way around it.

I can confirm that this works, tested with my laptop and desktop PC both connected to the same wireless router. Make sure to allow access with the firewall popup when you boot the game for the first time, and I think both computers have to have sv_lan 1. Not sure if it works entirely, the game could glitch out or whatever, but it indeed initially works. I'll post a video once I'm done recording/editing.

Also, make an autoexec.cfg in the cfg folder in the EYE folder with

sv_lan 1
maxplayers 8

so you don't have to type that every time you boot the game.

Alright here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQ4799nHDtc

TEXT GUIDE:

Make sure both PCs are connected to the same router/network

Allow the firewall access popup when booting the game for the first time, or else it might block incoming lan connections.

Go to C:/ - GOG Games - E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy - EYE - cfg folder

Copy one of the .cfg files to desktop, rename it to autoexec.cfg then move
it back to the cfg folder.

Enter this text in autoexec.cfg

sv_lan 1
maxplayers 8

Then save it, preferably have the same autoexec.cfg on both PCs so you don't have to type it into the console every time you boot the game.

Go into console with the HOST PC, type status to get your local ip, write it down

Then enter

map warp

in the HOST PC's console to host a server and start the intro hub level.

Then on connecting PCs type

connect INSERT HOST LOCAL IP HERE

Hit enter, and you should connect

I'm not sure if this entirely works, I'm not even sure if it saves characters and progress correctly, but it at least works to some extent.

Fantastic news. I wanted to see if the dedicated server from the Steam version could be excised and used somehow without needing Steam, but lan and Hamachi (etc) works too.

It really is a unique game, just more of a cult classic - so an acquired taste.
