I came here to see if anyone else was having this problem, and it looks like I'm not alone. I have an original Sidewinder Precision Pro USB, which is probably identical to the other Sidewinder sticks, axis-wise. I did notice I needed to set the Throttle to use the Throttle and not the POV hat, but regardless, I can still not control the aircraft at all after loading Quick Start. It seems like all the axis are jumbled around or something. I have some other joysticks I can try but this is my trusty favorite. I get this is a new release to GOG so hopefully something can be figured out in an upcoming patch?

Edit: Just ran another test to check something, and I definitely have to pull back on the stick to keep the engine running, like the throttle is somehow crossed over to the y-axis. But the other axis all seem to have very minimal effect on any movement.

when I tried to fly with a joystick the engine would turn off and the plane just spin and stall,I had to disabled both the throttle and twist on my joystick to get it to work normally

I don't think I can turn those off on mine. Still need to see if another stick is going to have the same problem but I don't know why it would be different, they're all just 4-axis sticks. Except for my X45.
If anybody has been able to get this to work with the Thrustmaster T16000m please let me know. I start the game and my plane just starts spinning and diving to the left, nothing works. Go into advanced control settings and try to assign controls and it doesn't recognize any inputs. I knew it was too good to be true when they added one of my all time favorite WW2 sims. Hopefully this can get patched or some other workaround because it's killing me not being able to play this.

Hi chief1983, I also have the Sidewinder Precision Pro and have the same problems. It's the same stick that I used to play EAW when I was a kid. Back then worked like a charm, now it makes the plane spin in circles.
It's not the Sidewinders fault! I'm playing the new IL 2' games on it and it makes the job done. I love this joystick!
I've checked the .ini files and in dixi.ini found the list of supported controllers. I've connected another toy and i could not beive it!I was smoking those He 111 one after another! Like it was 1999 again! On a... xbone controller.
Yeah, You can play EAW in 2021 with no problems on a dual shock 4, xbox, or even on a frigging nintendo switch controller, but not on a Sidewinder! What a joke!

Ok, after some reading in eaw.ini under

[CONTROLS]
I've changed
JoystickDeadZone=from 4 to 0

And it sucks a little less, so it seems. No spinning. But i still have the throttle crossing with the y axis that. You described. If I 'll find a way to set it up I'll keep You guys posted.

Cheers!

Does "Windows Joystick=1 or 0" into the "eaw.ini" change something for you? Apparently it does not change anything for me (Logitech Wingman Extreme 3D) but it could be dfferent for other sticks. My Joy works fine except the throttle and rudder not functinal. Both are bundled into the Joy itself, no external peripherials, but the working axis work very well.
Hi there,

I think I have the answer to this. It's to do with how the old EAW game engine assigns direct X axes to the control inputs. Back in the day, 3-axis joystick were the norm, and the 3rd axis (DX_Z_AXIS) was assigned to the throttle, not the rudder. When twist sticks came along, the rudder function was often assigned to the DX_ZROT_AXIS.

EAW reads the rudder function from the DX_ZROT_AXIS, and the throttle function from the DX_Z_AXIS.

That's why some sticks work, and some don't, depending on how the axes are assigned by default in Windows.

I have set up my Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog, Throttle Quadrant and TFRP Rudders to work with EAW, using the TARGET software. Here's how:

Set up a combined profile using all three physical devices, so Windows reads only one logical controller.

Then assign the axes in TARGET as follows:

Joystick X & Y axis to DX_X_AXIS and DX_Y_AXIS respectively.
Throttle Axis (both left and right physical throttles) to DX_Z_AXIS
Rudder Axis to DX_ZROT_AXIS

Run the script, run EAW, and now throttle and rudder work as intended.

If you don't use TARGET, you can achieve similar results using the vJoy and UJR programs in combination. You just have to set up a single logical stick for windows to read, and assign the axes on that logical device as explained above. Or, if you have a single twist stick which isn't working properly, you can set it up so the twist function controls the DX_ZROT_AXIS, and the throttle controls the DX_Z_AXIS.

The "joys" of old flight sims... ;-)

Is TARGET software compatible with other Joysticks different than Thrustmaster?

No, TARGET only works with Thrustmaster hardware.

But you can use vJoy and UJR in combination to create a single virtual stick from multiple different hardware.

Ok Thanks.

If you are experiencing problem as I am (only buttons works, no axes) - delete dinput.dll from EAW directory (or change its name). Now EAW is working as expected - at last on my setup (Saitek X45)

Good News!

Renaming the "dinput.dll" file works perfectly.

Now all the axes are functional and working. Thanks a lot. Such a simple solution.

Pozdrawiam !
I had no throttle with my Logitech Extreme 3-D Pro.
The problem is caused by the "dinput.dll". Removing that file fixed the problem.
