As of the current beta patch (September 2024), GOG players can now opt in to the 1.3 beta series from within the GOG Galaxy client! No more downloading and extracting zip files manually.
Open the configuration through the top dropdown menu, then select "1.3 beta" in the Beta Channels dropdown as shown in the attached images.
For those who have not yet tried the 1.3 beta patches, here's a PARTIAL list of highlights since 1.2 was released way back in 2010:
- Fixed many, many crashes and multiplayer out-of-sync issues
- Added around 10 new mapmodes
- Completely revamped rebels with new factions and differing goals
- Many brand-new UI interactions, including new notifiers and an all-new Holy Roman Empire interface
- Improved AI
- A huge number of new modding/scripting features
- Increased maximum playable resolution from 1920x1080 to 2560x1440 (2k)
- Extended timeline from 1419-1819 to 1399-1837
- Four brand-new historical scenarios (1399, 1453, 1546, and 1816), two of which take advantage of the extended timeline
- Two new fantasy scenarios - build your empire through colonization and warfare, but watch out for the invasion of Atlantis!
- Complete overhaul of all existing scenarios for improved balance and historical accuracy
- Dozens of new countries to play, form, or revolt
- Formable countries can now be formed by player-driven decisions - you can see exactly what you need to form Russia or Lotharingia or the Caliphate of Córdoba rather than having to look up an event
- Hundreds of new historical events, leaders, and monarchs
- Hundreds of new pictures for historical events
- New map colorscale options (see the Settings screen in game)
- Reduced randomization of combat
- Updated the bundled AGCEEP mod to 1.60, including many updates that take advantage of new 1.3 modding features
