Have tried numerous installations of game. It will run for about 10 minutes or so but will crash and crash hard. Have tried various tricks Run as Admin, run with anti virus off, checked properties and used various service packs. 'CANT LOCK SURFACE' is what usually pops up the rest of the paragraph says surface memory is gone,Direct Draw Surface object representing this surface should have Restore called on it. I have no idea what this means. I like the game and I would like to play it so any help would be appreciated.

That error usually appears when something stole the focus from the game and it got minimized. (That's why Alt-Tab is blocked in this release). Please try to shut down all unnecessary applications running in the background, like Skype etc.
Thank you for the suggestion, I will try it soon and let you know how it turns out. Being a tech noob how would you turn off the items running in the background? I really hate to ask but I appreciate the help!

Exact appearance depends on your operating system, but in bottom right corner you should have a set of notification icons. Some may be hidden, but you can click on small arrow next to them to show the full list (see attached pic, that's how it looks like on Win7).

These icons represent additional applications that currently run on your PC. Usually you can right-click on them and pick 'exit' or similar option.

Do you know if you have ATI graphics card by chance? I now remembered that on some ATIs, when program tried to run in lower resolution, a warning message appeared. Such popup message could also cause that crash.

If you will still suffer crashes, consider contacting our Support:

I can only watch forums in my free time and they might be able to help you quicker :)

Thanks for the help, I am not sure what video card I have but I will try to run game at a higher resolution and see if it helps. Thank you for your time and attention!
I think I figured out the problem. I have modded games such as Arcanum and Torment in the past, so I tend to load the game files to a folder other then the X86 files. They are easier to mod if they are in another separate folder. I deleted the game and downloaded it again this time allowing it to download into the GOG.com file in the X86 files. Now it runs with no problems. I did try to find a patch for the game and did find one on Gamespot, but I think the patch only applies to a cd load of the game. Anyway Thiev, thanks for your help and advice. I did get my computer to run faster by shutting down some startup programs and shutting off some progams running in the background. I love GOG.com and it's great community support! Oh, by the way you can go to the Etherlords home page and try to download the patch there but no joy for me because I cant read Russian or French.

Don't worry about patches, GOG games are always patched to the latest official version - Etherlords included ;)
I've bought recently Etherlords to find I can't run it on my laptop (exceeding game's requirements - CPU 1,5 GHz, 2GB RAM, Gfx SIS 3 Mirage 128 MB (okay gfx is weak, but still more than needed by this old game) running Win 7 Home Edition 64 bit. It crashes during launch:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: Etherlords.exe
Application Version: 1.0.0.0
Application Timestamp: 3d354b40
Fault Module Name: SISUMD32.dll
Fault Module Version: 8.14.10.5240
Fault Module Timestamp: 4afb6d90
Exception Code: c0000005

Some ideas how it could be solved (except Virtual Box)?

Any update to this as of yet? Game still does not run.

How long ago? If it's been more than a week I would send them another reply.

August 17th, I resent the original message.
Hope this helps someone. I have an ancient machine running windows XP. I typically use the runas command to run games as an administrative user. That did not work for me when I tried to run Etherlords. The application would continue to run someplace. I could hear an error sound but no error message came up and I could not kill the application (since it was initiated by an admin level user). Interestingly when I log in as the admin user I'm able to run the game (makes no sense, supposedly runas would give the same permissions).
