I recently got my hands back on my old CDs of Etherlords (1 and 2), both of them in french. I installed both games from the CDs and with GoG, and I tried to copy the data from the french installs to the GoG (english) ones, and the games still run perfectly well, but they're also now fully in french. I noticed one small inexactitude so far (the description of the orc shaman ability, my french version says "Rest. +1 Ether.", but the orc shaman's ability dispels enchantments, so it might be from an older patch).

So I was basically wondering, could these files be used to add french localization to the game on GoG ?
The way I did it isn't perfect (like with the example I mentioned), but it works as far as having the french voices and text in the campaign goes without problem :)

Yes, absolutely! To summarize it, most of the games localization is stored inside the .res files you find in the Resources folder. While the mapping of most of the game logic is stored in the regs.res file, the text.res file is responsible for most of the ingame text. Overwriting/Changing the .res file will also reflect in the game. The question now is what the goal of your question was. If it is just confirmation, that replacing the .res file will work, then you got it with this post :)

If you want to bring the french files to the latest patch, you will probably have to manually translate the .res file of the latest patch - but modern auto translation should help a lot with that, as the unpacked .res is simply a .txt.
