(Bonus points if you read that topic with Neil Finn's voice singing it...)
I decided to take a few hours (6, I think) and went from rock throwers and clubmen to second-level cybers. I was using the retail copy and didn't have the foresight to use the expansion disc, so I couldn't get to the space age. Still.
What... a... game...

I went from rock throwers to Medieval, then I died. I am still new to the game...there is a lot to do...somewhat overwhelming.

Keep at it! Yeah the computer doesn't stick to one simple line of attack, the next time you play, make sure you have towers as well as some mobile forces to fend off a varied attack. It's definitely a learning process!
If there's water, build a dock really soon (you can also benefit from fishing boats), and build towers close to shore, they can take out boats quite well.

The water was what got me. Carthage was south of me, and they just continually hammered me with sea attacks...it was all I could do to keep my ports in one piece!
I *think* my mistake was that the map the game selected for me was meant for a single opponent, and I added a second.
I went from Prehistoric to WW2 in my last game! :)
