Is Elminage like Wizardry in that you need to get our some graph paper and make a map?

(This, my the way, would be a plus in my opinion. I've been looking for a game that requires graph paper to finish!)

Sort of.

There is an automap, but opening it requires casting a spell or using a consumable item, so you can't solely rely on it. Also, there are some levels that have features, such as teleporters, that don't show up on the map.

In any case, if you like to make your own maps with graph paper, feel free to do so; this is a great game for that sort of thing.

Later on there are even reusable maps (one with multiple uses and one that is prenament), but you don't have to use them at all.

I believe the permanent one is obtained *really* late, as in, I believe you might need to beat the 20 floor bonus late postgame infla-dungeon to acquire. (I should point out that the game became so difficult that I quit around reaching the 7th floor of that dungeon). In other words, I don't think it makes sense to consider that particular map in this discussion, as it will likely take over 100 hours of gameplay (not an exaggeration) to get to that point.

The reusable map is far more practical, and there's actually a spell that repairs them (as well as all other broken items in your inventory; quite handy), but it is found in a side area that is not mandatory unless you want to eventually access that infla-dungeon I mentioned.

Yeah, I have never got my hands on the infinite map. I only know that it exists.

Require? No, not strictly. Strongly encourage? Absolutely. I've graphed out my own maps.
