So for no apparent reason, my most recent savegame now refuses to load.

I finally broke down and learned how to use Wryemash, learned how to fix the load order, "repair all" (with Wryemash being so kind as to tell me "No problems!"), etc, and yet the damned thing still won't open, crashing at the same moment during loading.

My last savegame prior to that one was about 6-8 hours beforehand, so it would be nice to not have to lose that much progress. What exactly am I missing in fixing this garbage heap?

I guess you know this link: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tes3Mod:Repairing_Saves

As to potential causes for savegames becoming corrupted, the number of possibilities is probably quite large, but there are two reasons that came to my mind immediately:
- Mod conflicts
- Temporary storage problems (save file not yet written back to disk when game is terminated)
I can't speak of my personal experience, as I never had this problem myself. In general, I would recommend to save frequently, and to circle through several different savegames. I myself save once at least every 15 - 30 minutes, and always before I level up, enter a new dungeon or do other things I consider to be risky. And I never reuse a savegame. I use a sequential numbering system for savegames, and delete older saves manually from time to time.

Sorry if I couldn't tell you anything new.

Good enough, I think since I was in a rush the save didn't finish compiling before I exit the game.

Now that I've learned Wryemash the game itself is a lot more stable though (which MCP had already helped quite a bit with).
