But it wasn't me!

In City of Daggerfall, the guards keep showing up and arresting me for assault... but I haven't attacked anyone, to my knowledge.
I was recently charged with assault, pled not guilty, debated and was let off, then a few days later, after returning to town from quests, get arrested again...

What Gives?

Two things:

First of all: if you get too unpopular, the guards just decide randomly to arrest you. You are basically arrested for being a criminal.

Second: Make sure to not gallop in town or you will run over people and be charged with assault.

If I remember correctly, though, if guards come for you solely because of low legal reputation in a given realm, you'll be charged with treason, not assault.

And the "galloping too near pedestrians will get you in trouble" mechanic has to be another one from a mod, right? Because I don't remember that.

Yeah, you get charged with Criminal Conspiracy. The wording of OP was too vague to rule out that he was getting arrested for several things :D

And yes, the mod lets you use the run function while riding, but you are then constantly doing melee dmg in front of you. So it is possible to gallop in towns, but you have to look where you are going.

TY for the answers here!

Would it be possible to change a setting somewhere so I could Gallup, but NOT assault all the peasants in my way?

Nope, only setting is to remove the gallop function.

You need to slow down in towns :D
