I wonder if there is a hotkey that activates your mouse pointer to appear and you can click on the buttons in the F10 panel at bottom of the screen? or are these not buttons but merely depicting what is active?

You can press the ENTER key to enable "cursor mode" and interact with them. I believe they do much the same thing as a lot of the hotkeys though.
