I understand if you want to be able to play online then you must request a key. However, what if I just want to install the game on two local machines and play multiplayer with my son? Note that I have not purchased the game yet so maybe this is obvious once you launch the game.

Namur: Check this post.

Ok, so it supports local multiplayer but still requires a key...does that mean I need to purchase 2 copies of the game to play 2 players locally?

I would assume that one copy is all you need to get, but since i'm not 100% sure, i really don't want to risk giving you a wrong information.
You can always shoot a quick mail to support to make sure.
I would try it for myself to make sure but i still haven't requested my serial from support, sorry.
