I know there's already several threads on this same topic, but none of them have solved this problem. (Even after what appears to be six years or more!!!!!)
PS/ Sorry looks like I've bumped up a few other threads about this all at the same time as well..... still, seems like GOG need a slap to waken them out of their complacency on this one! :D

Most threads claim this "activation key" is needed for online multiplayer mode only. Well I'm afraid I'm finding this to be untrue!
My GOG copy of Earth 2160 only has "activate key" and "exit" options when it loads.
When I inevetably fail to give it the key, just leaves me an animation sequence playing along with the credits rolling, no menus, no nothing, which then immediately quits to windows when I press any key or any mouse button! So I cannot do nothing with it, single player, campaign, skirmish, multiplayer!
Even the separate editor asks for this goddamned key, and just quits out when you can't give it.

Normally GOG display any necessary keys in your account library, when you click on the game itself to download it - but for Earth 2160 there is none given!

I've also heard this game is subject to one of the worst DRM restrictions ever, just 3 installs on new machines / updated hardware profiles and that's it, from then one you have to contact the grifting, robbing, rip-off merchants at Zuxxex, directly over the phone, and beg them to let you install again!

How in God's name is this compatable with GOG's promises of "DRM Free" and "Yours to Keep, Forever"?

After having kept on messing around with this Earth 2160 eventually I did actually manage to get it as others in these forums say it is. The trick seems to be installing on the C: drive and not any external drives. Everytime I did that the game would not work AT ALL, FULL STOP without the key, but on the C: drive, all the single player parts of the game work, only multi player needing any keys.

And as for this crippling DRM, GOG support say they've never even heard of it (and therefore assumed they'd taken it out of their version)..... well, the jury's still out whether GOG have removed it or not, but I've got to hand it to TopWare & Zuxxez Software, they've managed to lay one of the worst ever DRMs on the public ever seen! :D Install it more than 3 times and you have to ring them on the phone everytime you want to install after! Yeah, nice work you robbers! :D What if your phone line ever disappears, and I bet it's about £20 a minute (minimum call duration 20 minutes)! :D
