I have a glowing red button in the bottom left hand corner of my screen, that when pressed, tells me that I need to activate the game via internet, unless I want to run in demo mode.
Uh, that sure as hell stinks to high heaven of the worst kind of DRM - the online-activation type.
Would really like to know whether that button can safely be ignored, I never touch anything that needs to speak to the outside world in order to function with a 10-foot pole...
Contact the GOG Support; they should help.

Same here im a little ticked. Already contacted support no response yet
Well how much have we all tried to play our game?
I personally tried to do the activation thingy, quick and easy, I don't care too much, but....
Activation failed 3 times because it said it was being activated on too many computers or something to that effect.
So with me failing activation/registration, I booted up a skirmish, I found all the maps to be selectable(i believe) and was able to play right away.
Two campaigns without activation seem to be selectable too, so maybe we don't need to register at all.
Thoughts?
PS: GOG team is in Poland, right now in Europe its around 9pm, so yeah look like you will all have to wait for a response.
damn. =(
DRM on GoG noooo plz... ><
its definitely a bug because the advert says that the game requires no online activation or has any drm at all.
expect a new client soon to download. good job the game is only 800meg and not 8gig.
That red button in the corner of the game is something we can't change from appearing and we can't change the description. There is no online activation required. We've worked with the devs but it's not something we can change as far as I know.
Even if you attempt to activate and it states it's in demo mode, it's not. It works straight out of the box.
There are some multiplayer keys which are available from support as well and I can see we've missed that as well on the support page.
Sorry for the mix-up, I had hoped the team had added something as the support FAQ for the game but I can see it's not there ;-\
We'll get something added ASAP.
Thanks for letting us know. Had the red activation button myself thought might been residual from when i deleted the steam version. Tried the activation and got nowhere but saw i could acccess the campains so i am happy :).

D-D-D-DRM Breaker!
Love the fast response times, I figured it was just a graphic, and removing that would involve changing some code in the game.
I thought it was interesting we had access to all the features without activating it, so yeah guess there's no need to distress.
Cheers

Thank you for the clarification Oldski. Would have been very surprised if your answer had been any different, so that's all good news.
To clear the whole situation:
Our version of Earth 2160 doesn't require activation to play. That's for a start.
The button you can see inside a game is only for Earth.net multiplayer purpose. Since Earth's servers register users by serial numbers they must be informed that your serial is unique - therefore you activate this key in order to play on Earth.net.
To play local/IP version of multiplayer you just need to obtain your own serial code from our support team. And here you don't need to activate your game, you're playing on your own.
And singleplayer is free of any kind serial/activation stuff (which is usual here on gog.com :)
One thing that might be rather stressful is that unlucky text saying that if you do not activate the game you will be playing demo mode - well, this is sth we couldn't change, but believe me - this means nothing - there is no demo mode in our game :)

So just to further clarify from that, the CD Keys you give out on request will enable both LAN and Earth.net(Internet) multi player ?
I think GOG should seriously look into some way of automating generation of CD Keys for products like this ..

Could be as simple as, giving one to you automatically in your account messages section after your payment is complete.
I am sure GOG will do this, they love their customers and I'm sure they want things to go smoother the next time.
Honestly they dispatched my CD-Key so quickly I didn't miss not having one.
Thank guys!

Since you got a key do you know if it enables internet play as well as lan ?

Yes, Multiplayer mode requires unique cdkey, if you got one (from our support) then just enter it and LAN as well as Internet play will be available for you :)
