Hello everybody! If someone bought this game, please tell us, whether the computer AI is normal and computer really tries to win :) I ask this question, because I encountered a crippled version (believe it was from Zuxxez) of this game, and it was deliberately changed into something very dumb, like a body without spirit. ("to make the game easier").
Thanks a lot for the info, I intend to buy it...

strejcius: Please, anyone can say how much bad AI is there? Many thanks

It is described in the beginning of this thread, just read a few posts ;-)
So this is very bad that GOG sell game whitch is broken. There will be better when they stop selling this game.
For my part, I wonder why my game isn't exhibiting the same problems that everyone else seems to be having. I just finished the last level of the UCS campaign, and it felt to me like I was beating off a counterstrike every ten minutes or so. Good thing the enemy wasn't using nuclear weapons...

And did you tampered with the files in any way? Seems strange. I also wonder what's going on between GOG and TopWare (or how the hell they name themselves now) about th fixed version.

Actually... yes. There was a .ini file that controlled some basic game functions: game speed, fog of war, and so forth. I edited that to make the game run slower (didn't make any visible difference), and to turn the fog of war off (it's hard enough to kill every single enemy on the map when you CAN see them!). I also edited the game's startup shortcut to enable cheatcodes.
I dunno why any of that would affect the AI, though.

You should put your ini file here so we could try it too and see the difference (if any)

Okay, here it is. Look in your Earth 2140 folder and you should find a Configuration Settings text file named "Game." Text is as follows;
[ sound ]
reverse = 0 # 0 - normal mode, 1 - reverse stereo mode
soundsOn = 1 # sounds on/off
soundsVolume = 7 # 7 - max sounds volume, 0 - no sound
speechOn = 1 # speech on/off
speechVolume = 7 # 7 - max speech volume, 0 - no sound
musicOn = 1 # music on/off
musicVolume = 7 # 7 - max music volume, 0 - no sound
[ video ]
playIntro = 1 # play intro sequence
[ panel ]
gameSpeed = 2 # game speed: 0 - min, 2 - max
scrollSpeed = 2 # scroll speed: 0 - min, 2 - max
interface = 0 # 0 - normal mouse mode, 1 - reverse mouse mode
fogs = 1 # 1 - fogs visible, 0 - fogs invisible
spy = 1 # 1 - spy panel active, 0 - spy panel inactive
[ unknown ]

If I remember right, I set the gameSpeed to 1 and fogs to 0. I will repeat for the record that I highly doubt this will help you.
I got this game during the topware promotion and while the AI isn't monstrously difficult it certainly kept hitting me with attacks in the later missions and deffinitely set up working mines and refineries. I also had to keep shooting down heavy loaders that tried to take my mine's ore. It seems very odd some people are having such different experiences with the game....

Having recently played the GOG Earth 2140, I can confirm that it's actually quite challenging; thus I recommend not paying too much attention to whether it's crippled or not :). It's good enough anyway.
I played the demo when it was first released back in 1998 and then purchased the game when it was officially released by Interplay and Topware. It was, in my opinion, the best RTS for it's time (especially when the only comparison was C&C). But the AI in this version is rediculously bad. I barely have to try to beat these missions. I even set it on the highest difficulty and it made no difference. I wished I hadn't even purchased this game.
I got this game, with the two mission packs, free with the first issue of PC Action magazine, here in the UK. It is the DOS version. The DOS version has great AI whereas the Windows version doesn't. If this GOG version comes with DOSBox then it'll be the great AI, if it doesn't then the AI will be crap.
any news on that one? i want to experience all earth games, but i want to play them from beginning to the end, so i want to wait until the ai of 2140 is fixed (if that ever happens)
This is very sad news indeed. I do own the GOG/XP version, but never got around to playing it yet. However I also have the Amiga\Mac version and I can report that the AI works just fine. I do hope it can be fixed as you guys are really missing out. What a shame. Maybe some parts of the DOS version could be included in the XP release? It would be upto GOG to try and secure the rights to do so and then update there own version.
Just got E 2140 from GOG. Well, the AI is totally DUMB. Computer player is NOT making any new buildings nor new units... That makes it pretty damn easy, which is very sad...
More than a moth ago I had written this message to GOG, but they didn't even bother to answer. Lets see if they read the forums:

Hello GOG,

according to this thread:
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/earth_series/a_question_about_earth_2140s_ai/page1
you confirmed that the AI in the game you have the rights for is indeed weak (I say crippled).
But that is going to be two years old post soon.

Have you attempted to secure the rights for the original release of the game, or some other workaround, to give us the game in the state we remember from the past days (=challenging). I am very sure that many players are considering this a major problem and didn't buy the game consequently.

Please do not tell me, you did not put at least some effort to resolving this issue as you promised.

To encourage you, I must say I really appreciate the way you are treating your customers (=us) and wish you all the best in the future.

The matter is still far from closed to many of us.
