COnfused as to why my crossbowmen are goign up in price every turn.... they are up to 227 gold per unit now. Is there a reason for this?

Its the price for the resources they require which you don't have, everytime you or someone else buys it, it goes up. I think its Iron, conquer a mine, and the price will remain constant.

Yeah it can be brutally expensive to have to buy units when you don't have access to the raw material. You can often find an iron deposit by exploring hills or redwood by exploring forests. Can be a good way to wage war against enemies by taking away their iron deposits which makes their troops more expensive.

Assuming you can get to the resources fast enough ^_^

I just started a game and there was a Redwood right next to me. In the previous shard half the game was over before I got some Redwood, but I got Iron and Horses almost immediately.

The shard before that was a total faliure because of some financial mistakes I made, but I had two redwood, horses, and Iron within one tile of me, and while exploring came across (Dironum?) but never conquered the guards before I gave the shard up to my enemies.

So scouting out and quickly grabbing the tactical resources... Is a good idea me thinks.

Or, like delphinium said you can explore the hills/woods/swamps for iron/redwood/mandrake. Since I need a lot of iron I always look for it when starting, yet last time there was none in the vicinity... none in 15-20 hexes! But I've got few hilly provinces so I wasted time exploring them...Result? 3 in 5 had iron deposits! I don't know if it's just luck or is the iron that prevalent, but this sure helps (economically too).

Scouting out to find them and secure them as quickly as you can. Primary hero grabs the ones already revealed, the secondary or third hero wanders about within captured provences searching for potential resources.


If you get lucky and find a store that offers gargoyles or some other powerful unit (My capitol had a gargoyle trader once) then you can easily overpower stronger forces to secure your strategic resources~ Assuming you can keep them alive. They're expensive without marble. Best part IMO is unlike the summons you can get from your Library or via scrolls, these can level up and persist after battle.

Is there any difference when you have more than one iron? I always thought, that one iron is enough and if you have it you simple don't need to pay for this at all.

Sure there is. While it doesn't appear to reduce prices of units or buildings any (As far as I can tell), for every unit of Iron or Redwood or Mandrake or whatever, you get more gold per turn. Add a building to that (A Mine or Ancient Mine for Iron, Mithril, Marble, etc and a Sawmill for Redwood) and it further increases the cash you get.

So there is some benefit to acquiring multiple provinces with the same resource, even if you already own some.

Add to that the possibility of finding additional Silver mines or the like while exploring a province already sporting Mithril or Marble and you've got a lot of income being harvested from that town. =)

I always thought that more icons = more money if you don't have that resources. For example if you want to hire unit with two iron icons, you need to have iron or pay for two units of that resource. If I'm wrong, someone should correct me fast and kick my ugly a** for lying.

Hell, maybe you're right... I don't remember now and since at work I can't play somebody probably solves it before I can check ;].
