So I have restarted the campaign three times already and have lost all matches (excluding tutorial). I have been playing with the easiest difficulty. Can't really progress without some tips.

Could someone provide useful tips on how to survive on this game? How many heroes are optimal? Most of the time I'm running only one hero but I have tried to hire an another hero but it will drain my resources too quickly if I try to maintain two armies. By the way is there way to disable the tutorial section at the beginning of the campaign and skip straight to the Astral?

I don't mind if there's a cheesy way to win battles. Can't really see myself playing this game much longer if I can't progress at all.

You can skip tutorial by choosing a right answer in the first dialog with your "teacher".
As for tips, I can recommend you to read that short review. There is some useful information about heroes classes and starting buildings.

Thanks, that was helpful. Let see if I can conquer those shards now.
I have three shards now (including the one of the tutorial)

So far I noticed the following:
(In Short)

Without more powerful spells the Wizard sucks.
Without more powerful units the Commander sucks as well. (And the upkeep for his units is suffocating)
Without more powerful units the Archer really kicks ass, as long as the enemy isn't hiding in the woods.
Without more powerful units the Fighter is pretty powerful but at higher levels he tends to suck against powerful spellcasters with web, poison and other lingering spells.

My favorite low level cannonfodder units are pikemen and heavy infantry (I didn't get tier 2 units yet. Where are they, goddammit???)
Combined with a skillfull scout hero with long range combat they can even defeat monster the heroes deems too difficult for his army...

The wizard is pretty good with magic arrow and summon imp in the castle. I am playing on competent now, the third difficulty, first I used bowmen, but they are too expensive, die often and dont do much damage. Then I tried heavy infantries, they dont do any damage. Now I am using Barbarians, they do great damage and have lots of HP, so they survive often.
I am on the 6 or 7th shard now and just got necromancer and summon ghost, these things have like 20 defense and pretty much unkillable, plus with necromancer you can keep them and level em up.
The game keeps getting better, now theres even trading and dimplomacy!

Which dialog/answer, specifically?

"You took your time, didn't you, Zarr."

This option is only available after you completed the tutorial scenario once. On restarting the campaign, there will be a response "you took your time, didn't you, Zarr" in the starting dialogue right after selecting a hero's class. Follow it and there will be an option to skip the tutorial shard and go straight to the Astral.
Okay, that's why I haven't seen it pop up. (I'm dealing with Chronic Restartitis, coupled with a tendency to want to 'perfect' the starting map...)

Dang! I deal with the same thing!
Just got this and thought I'd add some tips for anyone else googling for tips :D

The above notes are really accurate. Warrior is strong early and leader is quite weak. Mage is almost entirely dependant on finding scrolls and scout is quite strong.

Expanding on that:

Warrior is great, has a skill that increases your gold income, which can be really handy. He scales well with gear though and so without gear may seem squishy. Regeneration from that skill is really good.

Leader starts kind of weak. Big armies cost lots of gold. However as he levels up the army bonuses start stacking up. I guess around level 10 he will seem really good, but I had trouble levelling him up.

Mage is kind of weak, though summoning imps is really a strong spell. I found a fireball scroll on this one map though and that + imps made a really strong combo. I guess in the later game when you have a larger spell selection he really shines, but without the good spells he is too weak.

Scout is my preferred hero atm. Strong attack that can 1-2 shot most normal enemies. Really need to hunt for a good bow though, and without one he is kind of weak. I somehow got the ability to train lizard men, a scout with an army of regenerating lizards was very strong. Get +range bonuses though, they make a massive difference for the scout.

As for units yeah the barbarians were quite nice and cheap with lots of life. Though the lizard men have regeneration, same life and can walk through swamps. I think I got them for doing a lizardman quest.

This is all low level stuff though, level 1 units and spells, heroes getting to about 10. Only a couple shards done too. Restarted so many times :(

Ok if we are rating Heroes for starting the Campaign Mode then I would have to Rank them in the following Order.

1. Warrior - Spiders and other "Poison" units are his main weakness. Spell caster not that tough unless theres a lot of them. Make sure he has the Astral Energy spell for +3 resistance, also T2 Stone Skin also gives +3 Resistance as well. First Strike weapon on this guy is always a super +. Gear matters a LOT for this guy.
2. Scout - Bows and Arrows are very important to get and to maintain for full damage. Needs some decent meat shields to to keep enemies at bay.
3. Commander - Needs some decent creatures to fill those slots or it's a waste. The upkeep skill can reduce costs by upto 50% though at level 5.
4. Wizard - My Favorite but to dependent on getting needed spells and for me Swordsmen or similar units for shielding and finishing off guys. Also has a really hard time taking on Golem and Dragons due to their spell immunities. Equipments do not really help this guy.

Although truthfully very high levels spells are not always needed for Wizzies because some of the most useful are lvl 1 spells like, Fear, Web, Astral Energy, Burn Ammo and even Fatigue. But really for fights vs larger opponent armies your really need spells like FireBall (This is always a must have with me getting 4-6 of them) especially if you don't have decent troops like Swordies to protect you.

For a regular Single Scenario though that has ALL building allowed I would NOT rank them this way though.
Playing some more, this game is really hard. The second NPC master you meet, he just reams me over and over. How much does the AI cheat? He always has 3-4 heroes, grabs every zone, bombards me over and over and over until he pounds me into submission. I have never beat him. Feeling like restarting again at this point (about 8 shards in) but then I will have to face him again eventually. Plus he always has good spells too. It's not fair :(

EDIT: Is there a more advanced guide for how to start, good unit mixes, how to get better spells, fighting dungeon locations, etc? Can't find anything googling.

Well there is a thread entitled "Stream of Eador" wherein one of the more experienced players starts a 3 player, expert, avg shard size game and he has started with all but Mage so far.

Warrior - http://www.gog.com/forum/eador_genesis/stream_of_eador/post9
Scout - http://www.gog.com/forum/eador_genesis/stream_of_eador/post17
Commander - http://www.gog.com/forum/eador_genesis/stream_of_eador/post19

He will soon do Wiz I believe though.

I posted a topic a while back that might be useful for you. I listed all the abilities for all hero class combinations for the choice at level 10. The level 20 info is also included a few posts down.
