draxvbion: Man what a great mod. New Horizons is taking up all my free time. One of the best games ever made and my favorite mod of all time. Has even beaten out Fall from Heaven which I did not think would be possible.
I couldn't agree more!
And to give you all some more background information:
I've been a gamer since... well, for ever, starting with Pong on my uncle's brand new game console. :-)
Skip a few years, and there's Ant Attack and The Hobbit on good old Sinclair Spectrum.
Then there's Ultima Underworld, Wizardy and Might and Magic on PC Windows 3.1.
I've always loved RPG's, and then branched out to turn-based strategy, and I've played many: HOMM, AOW, King's Bounty, Civilization, SMAC, you name it...
But ever since I discovered Eador a few years ago, I regularly got back to it. And that was just plain vanilla!
I think it's one of the best 4X games ever made. With New Horizons it's not just one of the best, it's THE BEST !!!
I only found out about the New Horizons mod myself a few months ago. I played Drakon's English 1.5 release, based on mod version 13.0421 (April 2013) for a few weeks and knowing that the latest Russian release was in fact already at 14.0920, so 18 months of development later, I was really eager to get my hands on that. By that time Boon had already started his version based on Google Translate, so I eagerly awaited his release. But the English texts were inevitably poor, as can be expected of course with something translated automatically. So I decided to jump in, even though I don't know a word of Russian. I do know my way around translation though, so I used professional software to import all existing previous translations, both the original vanilla one done by the game studio and the efforts of Drakon's team on version 1.5. Once imported, I only needed to edit and improve the remaining content, which was still quite a bit. I could use Google Translate and improve those texts myself for about 95%, and with the remaining bits that were just too confusing for me, I got help from Kettarienne, a native Russian speaker. The end result is not 100% perfect (yet), but after the first few patches, it's definitely good enough to play and enjoy the hell out of. :-)
