Update 3

Problem:
The mouse is lagging and jumping, the sound is crackling and distorted, and the game performs very poorly on a modern CPU (i5-3570K). According the official forums (Russian language), this is not uncommon on faster CPUs.

List of symptoms I've noticed so far:

1. Mouse stutters, jumps, lags
2. Sound crackles and skips
3. Game performance is very low
4. CPU usage remarkably high

Potential solutions:
1. Until a patch or a better fix comes along, one thing that appears to work is temporarily reducing the frequency (speed) of your CPU. This can be done using Windows' built-in power settings. I've made a post detailing how you can do this below. You can ProcessLasso to automate the loading/unloading of the power profile (thanks syndicatedragon).

2. Try starting the game in Windows 95 compatibility mode.

3. Disable Steam.

4. Turn off the sound/music, then restart the game.

5. Start multiple instances of the game (turning the sound off on each of them), then play on the third or fourth instance.

You can try any combination of the above to make the game a bit more playable. Hoping for a patch.

Could you try to turn off all working in the background elements: browser, scanner, printer etc. It is possible that game might be laggy if there is too many items working in the background.
Thanks for the reply, JuriJ.

I've ensured that unnecessary background processes are not running. Here's some other things I've tried:

1. Set the affinity to a single core
2. Changed the Eador.cfg settings (Antiblink Delay, Refresh Delay, Poll mouse delay, Sleep time and so on) as suggested on the Eador.com forums
3. Ran in Windowed and Fullscreen mode
4. Tried using dxwnd OG Edition with various configurations (it was suggested on the Eador.com forums as well)

So far, none of those things have made any real difference. I'm not giving up, though, because what I've seen of the game so far is really great.
I'm having the same issue. Game feels very slow and crackly and laggy and all the rest of it no matter what I do.

I've got a 3570k and 8GB RAM, same as digitalus but my GPU is a 660Ti.
Have similar problems when Steam is opened.

Turning Steam off seems to *sort of* fix the issue though, but it still has a little bit of lag here and there.
Possible fix.

1. In Windows, create a new power plan (Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options). On the left, there should be a "Create a power plan" link.

2. Choose Balanced, then give your plan a name (I called my "Throttle CPU"), then click Next.

3. Choose the "turn of display" and "put the computer to sleep" options that you prefer, then click "Create."

4. Next to your newly created plan, click the "Change plan settings" link. This brings you back to the display and sleep settings. Click the "Change advanced power settings" link that will now be visible below them.

5. A Power Options window will pop up. Find the "Processor power management" setting, then expand it by clicking the + symbol. You'll then see some other things appear, one of which is "Maximum processor state."

6. Expand the "Maximum processor state" setting. You'll see "Setting: 100%" next to it. Click that, and change it to something far lower (I set mine to 50%). I also went ahead and changed the"Minimum processor state" to 5%.

7. Click OK.

Now, when you choose your new plan, your CPU will not exceed 50% of it's maximum speed. Slowing my CPU down like this makes the game run smoothly, with no sound issues or mouse lag.

Obviously you'll need to select a different power plan when you're finished playing Eador, otherwise your CPU will remain slow :)
hmm, I've got the same problem but I'm running WIndows XP so there are no such settings I believe... also, I don't think it's a very "smooth" solution and this should be resolved in a form of a patch, not having to tweak my computer every time I want to run it. there are quite a few of us, so...

This seems to work, it's not ideal but it'll do for now. Thanks very much!

Thanks for the temporary solution! I hope the game's eventually patched with a permanent one.

I've noticed in this game, though, as in Fallout, minute movements of the mouse aren't recognized, making it difficult to select UI elements as the cursor approaches them and your mouse movement naturally slows down. I can literally move my mouse very slowly (1-2 mm per second) and the cursor doesn't move at all.

Is there a recommended solution? I'm using a Logitech G500 with the latest Logitech drivers.
Shutting down steam really did help me... no more stuttering / lagging.
Win7 64bit here:
The power options workaround didn't help too much. Wether i put min/max 5% or min 5% max 50% it just gets a "bit" less laggy but still unusable here with an i5 2500 GTX460 combo.
What helps way more for me is starting the game in windows 95 compatibility but it's still unusable then. Not sure what to try next.
I've found out the setting the process priority to low helps.
Also the sound nearly gets stutter free when i alt+tab out of the game and start more processes browsers etc. Once i alt+tab back in it's still not playable at all though.
Getting rid of as many processes which windows might not need doesn't help here at all.
Setting process affnity to all cores makes it WAY worse as does putting priority to high or realtime ( usually crashes the whole pc if i do that ).
Hope it helps.
Solution:
Found a way to play the game.
Start the game, set the music to off in the menu.
Go back to the desktop and start another instance of the game.
Seriously, the more games you start the less stuttery it will get.
On the 4th instance it worked for me, only get stuttering very occasionally.
If you have ProcessLasso, you can use it to automatically change the power profile when Eador is running.

I really hope they can fix this issue though, it's annoying to have to jump through hoops like this to get a game to work.
