I can see he used Word of Life on it - that increases it's attack and speed dramatically over time. At the end it'd have 11 attack, which is very good...
the one shown on the left is a different swordsman (probably the one that did the last hit)
you can easily spot it because he is only level 6
Yeah I had two swordsmen in this fight, but the level 6 one didn't survive the next battle...

The 27 Swordman only had Word of Life on him for a turn or two at most, since I had to recast it after the AI Wizard dispelled it. Whether or not the attack boost carries over, but I doubt it.

Anyway. Is the highest I got a military unit, or any unit for that matter, but he never got the option of being promoted to a new unit - so I'm assuming it's only the militiamen then?
Possibly Spearmen can be promoted into Pikemen but I've never tested that. Haven't used Spearmen since the tutorial Shard ^_^
This site here - http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Feador.com%2Fen%2Fpage3.html - has all (or at least most of) the different skills units can learn, and from this it seems militias are the only ones to be upgradable. But there's still some very cool stuff available. ^^

What a shame... Judging by what the translation says, Dragons can't be recruited or even bribed into service ^_^;

"Hire the warrior can not."

Heh while I was playing I got a Random Event saying a dragon moved into one of my provinces. I had plenty of cash to hire someone, and my soldiers probably would have gotten killed, but I decided to do something unusual and unheard of... I let it stay :3
Sadly, no further events followed up that choice (Like when you decide to let the Giant Slugs roam free in the sewers :P ), and all it seemed to do was spawn a Dragon's Lair location in the tile. V_V
Really wish you had the option to tribute it something and send it off to wreak havoc in a neighboring tile or something. Would be pretty cool. Or serve as a Guard that you can't dismiss or control =)

You can have a Dragon as a guard contract, found one on shard 12 or so.

Really? Cool~
I only saw Hydras and Phoenixes listed on the PDF someone supplied... And something else which I forgot what it was but remember not caring about =P

On the flip side, if the AI gets to these contracts first I'm gonna be pissed because I don't plan on ever fighting one. The AI shall never use my dragons against me >:)
On one shard, 10 or so, the AI used a Phoenix on their stronghold as guard, that took me a kit of tries and a really long while for leveling up to beat!
fighting dragons isn'r so hard - a well leveled warrior can take down a dragon

but a cult of the dragon where the dragon is backed up by cleric and their heal + resurrection is another story (god bless he is magic immune and they can only resurrect other units )

still the hardest i have faced so far was the arena
on novice level i was able to win - sometimes even without loses - but the level beyond that - all the troops in the heroes army of the enemy are around level 30 - and he just killed my marshal in round one - eliminating all the boni he gave to my troops

but my troops leveled up rather well - with this back to the topic - here are two screens of interesting level up options i got

edit: somehow i can't seem to add screenshots as attachments

Ouch that sucks. Worst I've tried was both AI using Minotaurs for guards on their strongholds - also harsh, but managable (with bucketloads of losses).

That's not what I'm talking about. I don't *doubt* I could defeat one with a great hero or super army, it's that I don't *want* to defeat one.

Which is why if I see one as a guard contract for someone's castle I'd just forfeit the shard =P

I went into a fight against a Cult of the Dragon just to get a look at the critter and that was the one and only time ^_^
Hydras and Phoenixes on the other hand, I'd fight no problem. The hydra is actually kind of cute, almost made me feel bad taking it down when I first came across it =P
why wouldn't you fight dragons
just like smaug they loveto hort riches - and thus give you pracitally the best items in the game
well the cult of the dragon/phoenix/hyrda/giant give those items aswell - but more

otherwise you would have to buy the banner of unity and equally awesome stuff from rarity traders you encounter - and that is a lot of money
and bought treasures don't count towards the found treasures that give points

jamotide: It says on the right that he only has 7 attack, how could he do so much damage?
Note that his attack is seven even with only two health left. It must have started out at least at fifteen to still be seven when he's about to drop dead.
That really is the level 6 one though, it says level six in purple.

Also, fully levelled-up archers murder the crap out of dragons. You don't even need especially great equipment - a good crossbow, tuck yourself in a corner, and even if you're attacking it solo, it'll never get to you. Two double shots and it's dead.
