This is not a big deal, as it involves a minor quest, but it's annoying and I don't remember this NOT working in the old physical version I had years ago.

I'm talking about the "Book Return" quest in Glacern in DS1. The quest giver is supposed to give you a book and that unlocks additional dialog from two other NPCs that allows you to complete the quest. I didn't remember details from this because it's been years.

I accepted the quest, but couldn't remember which NPCs, talked to every one in the town... and none have any dialog related to the quest. A Google search reminded me that the quest giver is supposed to actually give you a book in inventory, but he didn't. Neither is it lying on the ground (my inventory was empty when I accepted the quest, one would assume the book would go into inventory otherwise). I still have every book I've found in the game up to this point, and I would not have sold one intentionally or accidentally.

I reloaded a save from before arriving in Glacern to see if the quest would proceed after getting the book... and didn't get the book again.

As I said, I don't remember this being bugged years ago. Was this bug somehow introduced to this version of the game? Was it in the original game but patched with Legends of Aranna? I'm assuming there is no way to get this to proceed using the console, which seems intended only for cheat codes.

I'm worried that if one quest is bugged there may be more. Anyone else having problems like this?

The NPC should give the third book and then there are 2 other NPC's you need to talk to. One is on top of a tower near the entrance you came in from the caves and the other is in a house by the stables. I haven't gotten that far in GOG's release of dungeon siege 1 so I cant say if it's just you or the release. But for sure there should be a book.

So I had some additional free time, I just cheated and ran there. The book dropped for me.

This may be a little late but since I had to restart a few times to try out some mods or remove some mods I did get to Glacern more than a few times. The 3rd volume of the book did indeed drop each time from the NPC next to the NPC that sells spells and lancegoodale (above) already mentioned the locations for book 1 & 2.
As the previous replies said, when we get the quest, the book is NOT added to inventory, but should appear on the ground nearby.

If you cannot see it, try pressing Z, the hotkey for collecting things from the ground. Or go into the map (click the control icon at the bottom of the screen, or use the TAB key) where, if the book exists, it should be represented by a moneybag symbol.

When going round the village, select the character, in whose inventory the book ends up, to do the talking.
