Hi guys!

I know that Windows 8 was just released and that Dungeon keeper 2 on Gog.com is not officialy compatible with it, but I still have some questions :

So, I buyed it a few days ago. Installed it, and patched. It looks like it works!
But : dkII-dx.exe : menu extremely smooth, but in game low-fps (2/3 fps),
DKII_SOFT.exe and DKII.exe : Menu low-fps, but game normal fps (25 ~ fps). But I suppose it's the not patched version? So It's going to bug or not?

Which one Am I supposed to launch?

Thx!

You should run the game from dkII-dx.exe and set the resolution to 640x480. On my Windows 8 machine, this did not affect the resolution in-game - it still plays at 1024x768 I believe. In fact, turning up the resolution just slowed the game down in game (as you described) and I'm running a corei3 w/ AMD HD 6780, so it's not like my pc couldn't handle it. This seems to me to be an odd bug.
You are right! 640x480 works perfectly! The game is really smooth now :)

But for me, it's really a 640x480 pixels resolution :p But It doesn't matter me! Thx, Lednaes! :)
Hi, I got the same problem on W8.
640x480: smooth
800x600: about 10 fps
1024x768: about 1 fps
In the display setting i have Direct 3D: "Fake device"

Setting ot at 640x480 don't solve nothing: it play at low res

Quad core AMD processor, and Geforce GTX 560 Ti.

Same problem here. I've experienced the same thing in many other old games too though. SWAT 3 and Divine Divinity run very poorly for example, while on Windows 7 they work fine.
Noticed the same thing. e-mailed to support and they promised to fix this, somewhere in the near future.

edit-
Well nothing has changed, the game's still broken and no patch/fix available.
This is gogs worst game and not worth buying if you not running older OS.
Well have to give some understanding because DK2 was never perfect and still needs a lot''too much'' of work to make it playable...

RSSS: I have the same problem, please fix it !

EDIT: Put it on 640x480 and it works !
- But it doesnt really work, no?
I wouldn't state is as 'solved' or 'fixed'..
This is only a workaround...

Tomorrow I will be installing Windows 8 on my laptop, I will try to recreate the issue and post my findings here..
The issue is not solved at all.

Just because we have to lower the res to minimum to get be able to play is just a big exclamation mark for GOG to fix this issue !

I guess we all have 20inch+ LCD displays with a strong system behind (amd quad, ati HD6000+, windows 8, etc.) and something running at 640x480 is just very hard to distinguish and unpleasant to play :)

Please fix the unplayable FPS rate for this great game at max possible resolution (1024x768 in this case) !

THank you in advance GOG team! :)
So I played around abit last night with this game, and upon reading the README file found what works for me. So I thought I would share :)

My system:
Windows 8 pro, x64, i7, amd gpu

How I play:
- After install, goto install directly, right click on DKII-DK.exe and choose to run it as Admin and run in compatibility mode under Win XP sp3
- Open cmd, goto your install directly, run the game with the grapics options enabled per README. Here's mine:
(C:\GOG Games\Dungeon Keeper 2>DKII-DX.exe -softwarefilter -32biteverything)
- Once the game starts up, goto options and select max on all graphics, but choose the lowest resolution (640x480)

It doesn't appear to matter what resolution you pick in the options appearance wise, as it appears to still be performing at 1024x768. But for whatever reason if I actually pick that resolution the game bogs down like I'm running a computer from the 90s. Odd. Haven't tested out 800x600 as there has been no need.

Hope it helps, as this game is truly one of my all time favorites and none of you should be deprived!!!!

Thank you for sharing the info. Looks like I'm a bit impatient with Readme files :))

The game runs ok for me now on 640x480. When switching to 800x600 or 1024x768 I get very low FPS and it gets unplayable. The differences between resolutions are noticeable as you can see in the screenshots I've linked below.

I am waiting for a real fix before I begin to play.

Holy cow dude, you aren't kidding ! I was the one not patient enough, I didnt even let it load after it bogged down. But your screen shot tells the story plain and simple. Damn I hope the upgrade soon.
