mefet: It seems to be totally random if the game works or not. I'm in the third dungeon and didn't have a single issue, whit a i7 quad core and amd 5970 radeon.
I concur. People who are blaming GOG for this should really be blaming Bullfrog. The original 1.7 patch actually
introduced a sound stutter/crash bug on some machines. I could tell when starting a new game that if the narrator's voice stuttered while saying, "Here walks the goodly Lord Antonius" that the game would eventually crash. This appears to be fixed with this version. (It was a QSound problem. I once fixed it back in The Day by downloading a new version of the QSound dll. I wish I still had that file. And no, turning off QSound in the options doesn't fix it.)
I've now played this game on three computers - a desktop running WinXP, a desktop running Windows 7, and a netbook running Windows 7, and I have yet to have any in-game problems with stuttering speech or crashes. Perhaps this is my reward for the hours and hours I spent getting this game to work in the past (needless to say, it's one of my favorite games ever).
While I feel for the people having problems, this version is much better than the 1.7 CD version in terms of compatibility, and GOG has already released an update to fix the black screens on various computers. Also, THE MAIN MENU LAGS. it always has and always will. It is not indicative of how the actual game will run for you.
