Happysin: Thank you for this. I actually was able to play through a whole level without crashing. Having no voice acting is a bit disconcerting, but a small price to pay for actually having some stability.
Can you increase the resolution when using this?
For anyone who is displeased with the way DK2 runs in recent versions of Windows, I may have a possible solution. I have installed DK2 in Ubuntu with Wine and it has, so far, run smoothly at 1024x768 for over an hour. I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and Wine 1.3 Beta. Since Ubuntu is free and can be installed from within Windows, this method should be relatively safe and easy for existing Windows users. Also if you use the Windows Installer you can easily remove Ubuntu.

For anyone interested, that has not used Ubuntu before, here are the basic steps:
1. Backup any important data. Whenever installing another OS you should backup. (I know you wont actually follow this step but it's a good idea and you probably haven't backed anything up in a while anyhow).

2. Download and install Ubuntu. Go to http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer (This link will take you directly to the Windows Installer for those who don't want to repartition).

3. Restart and boot into Ubuntu (During boot you will now see Windows and Ubuntu as choices. You need to use the arrow keys to select Ubuntu).

4. Most Nvidia and some ATI users will want to install the restricted video drivers for their card. Most of the time Ubuntu will automatically ask if you want to install these drivers. If not you will need to find the "Additional Drivers" application. If you are using an Intel chip then you don't have to do anything.

5. Install Wine. Go to http://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu and follow the instructions.

6. Use Wine to install DK2. First copy the DK2 installer to your desktop. Then right click on the installer and select "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader".

7. Run DK2. After the installation is complete you can try running DK2. If it doesn't work you can use Alt-F4 to exit. You may want to create a Launcher (rtclick - Create Launcher) with the following command: "wine C:\\Program\ Files\\GOGcom\\Dungeon\ Keeper\ 2\\DKII.exe -32display".

Sorry for the long post.

@DeckardC: Of course, I'll install another operating system just to run a game. How didn't I thought of this before. :)
But seriously it's not an option form My point o view, so I'll be waiting for a proper working version of the game.

I haven't bothered to try. The fact that it works at all is good enough for now. I'll start messing with settings when a stabilized version is released by GoG.
I've used the fix that was presented on some other thread and maybe it's Software mode only, but being able to really play the game is good enough for me (and at least they added texture filtering). DK2 isn't a real looker anyway. If that fix was automatically installed along with DK2 and got a shortcut in "All Programs" it would be good enough for me to accept GOG adding Windows 7 compatibility to the game's page.
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/dungeon_keeper/after_bullfrog_logo_black_screen_and_nothing_more

The fix in the above thread worked to fix graphical corruption for me. The solution that GOG provide here does work but the framerate seems lower and there are black lines around a lot of the objects in the game. I have not yet been able to test for long-term crashes though in either case.
Hardware acceleration disabled. 800x600 Resolution. Edited the EngineID value in my Dungeon Keeper registry from =4, to =2 (As posted by MikayP on page 1).

This results in no crashing after an hour and a half, at least, of play time, from my Vista 32-bit AMD dual-core, NVIDIA 9800GT.

A note, however, that the 'NVIDIA black box distortions' occurred on first startup. Navigating through the haze of the in-game option menu, saving, quitting to main menu, and re-loading cleared the distortion and no further black-plague buggery was encountered for the play time.

I hope this helps someone, and thank you MikayP and Firek for you suggestions that mainly solved my issues.
Does this allow me to up the resolution, and play with hardware acceleration

Deadrat: I can live without the hardware settings the game is awesome anyway and allways have been. but they could attleast try and make it so i can play in higher res than 800x600 without constant crashing.

in 800x600 it works fine though.

oudai: Yeah, but I want to play it with hardware mode enabled, as I used to 10 years ago... Software mode just looks bad.
He he well.. to be fair the game dosnt look that good in hardware mode either:)

That's just personal preferences.
Fix for flickering try adding to shortcut command lines -32bitevrything -disablegamma. It may help or it may not.

Even if you use 1920x1080 with the unlimited zoom exe file, and run the game with dkii -32bitevrything -disablegamma?

I noticed a bit tearing around the flies on dead bodies, but after I enabled 32bitevrything I forgot to pay attention to it, but did not notice any tearing. Still, if I do not notice it, I doubt it will do much about my game experience. I would like to try it with hardware acceleration though.

It used to be the sound that was the compatibility problem when I tried making DK2 run before GoG came with this release, and sound sure works very well. I cannot remember if I got hardware accelerated 3D graphics at that time though. Maybe I should try running this game on another computer and if that computer can use hardware 3D, then maybe it will be easier to see the difference.
Do other have problems with the third my pet dungeon? I'm getting crashes like every 5 minutes or so. I'm using the safe mode.
I've run DK2 up to Mission 8 with no problems!

Only reason I stopped was because I had to go out!

Running Windows 7 on an ATI Mobility Radeon graphics card @ 800 x 600 resolution in game on my lap top.

Touch wood now nothing goes wrong ;)
