I just got dungeon keeper one from the promo but the res is all annoying and it won't let me use the scroll wheel to zoom in and out and such. Then I saw a post for a program to make it work at reasonable resolutions. Only the music won't work and it requires the blood of a virgin and some eye of newt to get running

So my question is does dungeon keeper two run okay on windows 7 without so much crap? I mean I can download a tool, put it in the folder and run it but that's about it. I like the concept of mods on pc games(sometimes) but they are often way too much trouble and aggravation for me to bother subjecting myself to.

I mean it's fairly cheap right now but why bother getting it even cheap if the aggravation will be more costly than the game?

So yeah thanks in advance for any helpful people, provided they are actually helpful and don't act like computer thaumaturgy is simple.

DK2 usually works fine on Windows 7, using Compatibility Mode for Windows XP SP 3 and running it as Administrator.
There were some issues with ATi graphic cards, but GOG provides an alternative start executable (called Safe Mode), to circumvent problems with 3D hardware acceleration.

Does it need a tool to run in a res over say 800 x 600? I mean I might can manage that but lots of these like 97-99 games seem to run best(IMO) for a newer monitor at like 1024 x 768 or so. That way it's not so much the game can't handle it(though it depends) and if you get like 1920 x 1080 on an old game even with a tool then a lot of the time the UI or sprites or such are just too small.

I'm using an NVDIA card, GTX 760 if knowing makes a difference.

1024x768 works out of the box, due to in-game options. For higher resolutions, you'll have to edit two registry keys, but not every resolution runs crash free. You'll have to try your luck, but generally it works.

Okay one last question I think. Do I need to run in compatibility mode on the shortcut or the exe because I see a DK2.exe and a DK2 DX.exe in the folder.

Granted it IS working without the compatibility mode but it would probably run a bit smoother with it running that way right?
Im running this in Windows 8 and using compatibility mode WinXP SP3 on the shortcut won't make it work. Starts just fine and I get to menu, but clicking for example "options" will only make DKII-DX.exe crash and Im back at the desktop.

DKII.exe is for people with an Nvidia graphics card, but you'd be required to create a separate shortcut to this file and modify the shortcut to have these command parameters at the end: -32bitdisplay -32bittextures -nointmouse

e.g.

"C:\Games\GOG Games\Dungeon Keeper 2\DKII.EXE" -32bitdisplay -32bittextures -nointmouse

DKII-DX.exe is for people experiencing the "black screen" bug, or if you have a problem with turning on Hardware Acceleration in the game options.

If you're using Windows 7, there shouldn't be any need to run in compatibility mode unless you're experiencing crashes.

Try this updated graphics patch by Timeslip http://timeslip.users.sourceforge.net/temp/DK2-patch-v4.7z It has improved support for Windows 8.

If you have a fast graphics card, use this config file with antialiasing and anisotropy enabled
http://www.mediafire.com/download/l2v9uehi9wi4jrr/GOG.7z

The config file is located in c:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\GOG\DungeonKeeper2\

If you want widescreen, you need to change the resolution in the registry. You can do this by pressing WIN+R then enter regedit.exe

Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Bullfrog Productions Ltd\Dungeon Keeper II\Configuration\Video
There you will find two DWORD values which need to be changed, Screen Height and Screen Width.
Set them as you wish, but make sure that the base value is selected as Decimal otherwise it will NOT work.

I have my resolution set to 1280 x 800 and it works perfectly.

I'm not really noticing any problems aside just control issues which are I think unchangeable like making a possessed mention used wasd or not being able to change zoom with the scroll wheel.

Guess I'm worrying to much because of what I heard from others and if it ain't broke I shouldn't try and fix it?
